The thickness of GRC panels for curtain walls must be comprehensively determined based on loading conditions, decorative function, shape complexity, and service environment. The conventional thickness range is 12-30mm, extendable to 30-50mm for special scenarios, with performance and applicable scenarios differing significantly across thicknesses. As a company that participated in drafting GRC industry standards, Qinglong has established a scientific thickness matching system drawing on project experience such as the Wuhan Han Show Theatre and Poly Peninsula No.1 in Hainan, ensuring that products meet safety requirements while achieving cost optimization.
Conventional decorative GRC panels: thickness 12-18mm, suited for non-load-bearing curtain walls with simple shapes. Such GRC panels mainly serve a decorative function and do not bear loads from the main structure; they only need to meet requirements for self-weight, wind load, and seismic resistance, and are suitable for low-rise buildings, interior decoration, or exterior curtain walls with simple shapes. Ultra-thin GRC panels of 12-15mm, with an areal density of approximately 30-38kg/㎡, are suitable for interior decoration or low-rise building exteriors. Qinglong selected 12mm thick GRC panels for the interior curtain wall of a commercial center, engraved with European-style patterns on the surface, achieving the decorative effect while reducing wall loads; GRC panels of 16-18mm, with flexural strength ≥12MPa and wind load resistance ≥2.0kPa, are suitable for exterior walls of low-to-mid-rise buildings. Most of the over 70,000 square meters of GRC European-style components at Sanya Festival Plaza adopt an 18mm thick design, balancing decorativeness and economy. Conventional decorative GRC panels that are too thin (<12mm) are prone to warping and damage, while those too thick (>18mm) result in material waste.
Load-bearing and decorative integrated GRC panels: thickness 18-25mm, suited for mid-to-high-rise curtain walls with complex shapes. Such GRC panels must serve both decorative functions and partial load-bearing roles (such as supporting their own weight and additional loads), and are suitable for exterior walls of mid-to-high-rise buildings and curtain walls with light load-bearing needs (such as installing outdoor air conditioning units and decorative pendants). GRC panels of 18-22mm, with compressive strength ≥40MPa, can bear a small amount of additional load (≤0.5kN/㎡). Qinglong selected a 20mm thick design for the 19,800 square meter GRC curtain wall of Shenzhen Longhua Xiangshan Science and Technology Park, combined with dry-hanging installation, meeting wind load resistance requirements while providing a certain load-bearing capacity; GRC panels of 23-25mm, with flexural strength ≥15MPa and impact strength ≥3.0kJ/m², are suitable for high-rise buildings and buildings in strong wind areas. The GRC curtain wall of a 20-story office building adopts a 25mm thick design; wind tunnel tests show wind load resistance ≥2.5kPa, meeting the seismic requirement of 7-degree fortification intensity.
Special-function GRC panels: thickness 25-50mm, suited for double-curved, hollow-out, and insulation-integrated curtain walls. Such GRC panels include special types such as double-curved twisted panels, hollow-out carved panels, and insulation-integrated panels, requiring increased thickness to enhance structural stability and functional capability. Double-curved and hollow-out GRC panels of 25-30mm can better resist stresses during forming and use; the 15mm thick GRC carved panels at the Wuhan Han Show Theatre (thickened to 28mm at core load-bearing areas) meet fine carving requirements while possessing sufficient strength; insulation-integrated GRC panels of 30-40mm incorporate an insulation layer inside, with a GRC facing layer of 15-20mm plus an insulation layer of 15-20mm, for a total thickness of 30-40mm. Qinglong's insulation-integrated panels have a heat transfer coefficient ≤0.6W/(㎡·K), suitable for buildings in cold regions; heavy-duty GRC panels of 40-50mm are suitable for key parts of large public buildings and landmark buildings, offering high load-bearing and high impact resistance. The GRC curtain wall of a museum adopts a 45mm thick design at key parts, with compressive strength ≥50MPa, meeting long-term use requirements.
The core principle of thickness selection is “match to needs, avoid waste.” Qinglong determines the minimum thickness through structural verification, combining parameters such as wind load, seismic action, member span, and shape complexity, calculated with finite element analysis software, ensuring the thickness meets performance requirements without redundancy. For example, at the same span, double-curved GRC panels are 20%-30% thicker than flat panels to resist curved surface stresses; in coastal areas, thickness is increased by 10%-15% compared with inland areas due to larger wind loads. Meanwhile, through material formula optimization, performance is improved while maintaining thickness—for example, adding composite fibers to 20mm thick GRC panels raises the flexural strength to 18MPa, achieving a “thin yet strong” effect.
Thickness matching for curtain wall GRC panels is a combination of technology and practice, with a conventional range of 12-30mm, extendable to 50mm for special scenarios. With the professional perspective of a standard setter and rich project experience, Qinglong provides precise thickness solutions for every curtain wall project, meeting safety and functional requirements while balancing cost and effect. For designers and owners, scientific thickness selection is the key to the successful application of GRC curtain walls. With professional technical support, Qinglong helps enhance project quality.
