What Are the Core Performance Differences Between GRC and GRG? A Clear Definition of Material Nature and Application Scenarios

Although GRC (glass fibre reinforced cement) and GRG (glass fibre reinforced gypsum) share similar names and are both reinforced with glass fibre, their matrix materials are fundamentally different, resulting in systematic differences in performance, application, and cost. Qinglong Group operates mature production lines for both of these product categories. We believe that a clear understanding of their core differences is the prerequisite for making correct material selection decisions.

The matrix material determines fundamental performance. GRC uses cement as its binding material and therefore inherits the properties of cement-based materials: high strength, water resistance, weather resistance, and non-combustibility (Class A). GRG uses high-strength gypsum as its binding material and is characterized by low density, fine texture, strong mouldability, and fire resistance but no water resistance. This leads to significant differences in their mechanical properties: standard GRC panels typically have a flexural strength of 15–25 MPa, while GRG generally ranges from 8–15 MPa; GRC has a density of approximately 1.9–2.1 g/cm³, whereas GRG is about 1.2–1.5 g/cm³, making it lighter.

Application scenarios are clearly distinct. Thanks to its excellent weather resistance and high strength, GRC is mainly used for exterior building curtain walls, roofing, railings, landscape components, and the like, capable of withstanding long-term exposure to sun, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles. GRG, with its fine texture and excellent shaping capability, is mainly used for high-end interior decoration, such as ceilings, wall panels, and artistic forms in theatres, hotels, and clubs, enabling extremely complex relief work and smooth curved surfaces—but it cannot be used in environments that are permanently damp or outdoors.

Cost and production processes each have their own focus. GRC production typically involves processes such as spraying and vibration, placing high demands on mould strength and durability. GRG is mostly produced by casting, with relatively lower mould costs, making it better suited to interior components with highly complex shapes and relatively small production volumes. In terms of overall cost, GRG offers better value for interior areas with complex shapes and extremely high texture requirements; for exterior areas requiring structural performance and weather resistance, GRC is the only correct choice. At the early stage of a project, Qinglong Group's designers provide clients with professional material selection analysis based on the application environment, shape requirements, and budget.
