For GRC panels used in super-high-rise buildings, wind load resistance is the primary concern for structural safety, especially for complex double-curved surfaces, where the distribution and action mechanism of wind loads are more intricate. In multiple double-curved GRC curtain wall projects for super-high-rise buildings exceeding 200 meters, Qinglong Group systematically ensured wind resistance safety through a four-step approach: "accurate values from wind tunnel testing, aerodynamic shape optimization, targeted strengthening of the structural system, and safety reserves in connection nodes."
Wind tunnel testing is an irreplaceable means of obtaining accurate wind load data. We place a scaled building model, including its surrounding environment, in a wind tunnel to test the surface wind pressure distribution under various wind directions and identify areas of maximum local negative pressure (suction). For double-curved shapes, the wind pressure coefficients may be far higher than the simple shape coefficients provided by codes. For example, at the double-curved eave panels of one project, the extreme wind pressure measured in testing reached 1.8 times the code-calculated value. Based on the test data, we fine-tuned and optimized the local curvature of the double-curved surfaces, reducing the most unfavorable wind pressure by approximately 15% through smooth transitions and reduced vortex shedding.
In the structural system design, we adopt a dual reinforcement strategy. First, we increase the panel's own stiffness by locally increasing panel thickness or adding stiffening ribs in areas of concentrated wind pressure (such as corners and edges). Second, we optimize the supporting keel system, replacing traditional unidirectional keels with spatial triangular grid keels adapted to curved surface load transfer, allowing more direct force flow. All calculations are based on wind tunnel test data, with nonlinear analysis performed using finite element software to ensure that member deformation and stress remain within safe limits under 100-year wind loads.
Connection nodes are the first line of defense against wind and the most critical link. The connectors we design for super-high-rise projects have safety factors of no less than 3.0 for both pull-out and shear bearing capacity, and undergo rigorous full-scale mechanical performance testing. At the same time, the connection system allows a certain degree of deformation to dissipate wind-induced vibration energy. What Qinglong Group provides is not just panels, but a complete structural system solution verified by wind engineering—dressing super-high-rise buildings in a "coat" that is both beautiful and strong.
