What Are the Density Standards for High-Performance GRC Curtain Walls? Testing Methods and Quality Assurance Explained

Density is the core performance indicator of high-performance GRC curtain walls, directly affecting key characteristics such as strength, impermeability, and durability. The industry standard requires the density of high-performance GRC curtain walls to be ≥95% (i.e., porosity ≤5%). As a company that participated in drafting the industry standard, Qinglong applies even stricter internal control standards with density ≥96% (porosity ≤4%), ensuring product quality through precise material proportioning, advanced production processes, and scientific testing methods.

The industry basis and core significance of the density standard. According to Glass Fibre Reinforced Cement (GRC) Decorative Products (JC/T940-2022), the porosity of high-performance GRC should be ≤8%, while high-performance GRC for curtain walls, which must meet impermeability, frost resistance, and weathering resistance requirements, requires a density of ≥95% (porosity ≤5%). Insufficient density leads to: easy penetration of water, chloride ions, and other corrosive media, accelerating material aging; reduced strength, especially flexural and impact resistance; and surfaces prone to sanding and powdering, affecting the decorative effect. Testing shows that Qinglong's high-performance GRC curtain wall products all achieve a density of ≥96% and porosity ≤4%. In the 15mm-thick GRC carved panel project for the Wuhan Hanxiu Theatre, density reached 97%, ensuring the strength and durability of thin-walled components, with no surface damage after years of use.

Core testing methods: triple verification by volume method, mercury intrusion method, and water absorption test. The volume method calculates density through 'apparent density / absolute density'. Qinglong uses the water displacement method to measure apparent density with an error of ≤±0.01g/cm³, and calculates absolute density based on 2.65g/cm³ (the standard value for GRC matrix), ensuring accurate results. The mercury intrusion method uses a mercury porosimeter to measure pore distribution, accurately detecting the proportions of micropores (≤50nm), mesopores (50-500nm), and macropores (≥500nm). High-performance GRC requires macropore proportion to be controlled at ≤1%; Qinglong's products have a macropore proportion of ≤0.8%, preventing the formation of water seepage channels. The water absorption test evaluates density through 24-hour saturated water absorption; high-performance GRC requires water absorption ≤5%, while Qinglong's products achieve ≤3.5%, far better than the industry standard. The three testing methods corroborate each other, ensuring that density data is authentic and reliable. Every batch of Qinglong products must pass the triple testing and be qualified before leaving the factory.

The key to meeting density standards: material proportioning and production process control. In terms of material proportioning, Qinglong uses a low water-cement ratio (0.4-0.45) combined with high-efficiency polycarboxylate superplasticizer (water reduction rate ≥30%), reducing water usage while maintaining fluidity and lowering porosity; the aggregate is continuously graded quartz sand (0.15-2.36mm) with a void ratio ≤35%, filling the gaps between cementitious materials; fibers are evenly dispersed to avoid agglomeration that would form localized pores. In terms of production processes, high-pressure spray molding is adopted with a spraying pressure of 0.3-0.5MPa to fully compact the slurry and expel air; after molding, products are sent into an intelligent constant-temperature curing kiln for steam curing at 90-95°C for 12-16 hours, promoting full cement hydration and reducing capillary pores. Compared with the manual mixing and natural curing processes used for ordinary GRC, Qinglong's automated production process increases density by 5%-8%, with significant performance advantages.

The relationship between density and other properties: a mutually reinforcing quality system. The density of high-performance GRC curtain walls is directly related to compressive strength, impermeability grade, and weather resistance: for every 1% increase in density, compressive strength increases by 3%-5%, impermeability grade improves by 1 level, and weather resistance improves by 10%-15%. Thanks to meeting density standards, Qinglong's high-performance GRC curtain wall panels achieve compressive strength ≥50MPa, flexural strength ≥18MPa, and impermeability grade ≥P10, with strength loss ≤8% after 50 freeze-thaw cycles and no corrosion after 500 hours of salt spray testing, fully meeting the requirements of high-end curtain walls. Density is the 'foundational property' of high-performance GRC; all other properties are built on the premise of meeting density standards.

The density standard of high-performance GRC curtain walls is the core guarantee of quality. The difference between the industry standard and Qinglong's internal control standard reflects the company's pursuit of quality. For owners and designers, density is a key indicator when selecting a GRC manufacturer. With strict standards, scientific testing, and advanced processes, Qinglong ensures that every GRC curtain wall panel meets the density standard, providing projects with quality products that combine strength, durability, and decorative appeal.
