The high temperature and high humidity environment of humid regions can easily lead to mold growth on building facades, affecting both aesthetics and living health. As a new type of facade material, UHPC's mold resistance has attracted much attention. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP material R&D and after-sales service, draws on project practice in humid regions to explain the mold growth risks and prevention measures for UHPC facades.
#Mold-Resistant Properties of UHPC Facades: Born with Protective Advantages UHPC material itself has strong mold resistance, reducing the risk of growth at its source. Qinglong Group's UHPC facade panels are mainly composed of inorganic materials such as cement, quartz sand, and steel fibers, containing none of the organic nutrients required for mold growth, making it difficult for mold to attach and reproduce. Meanwhile, the UHPC material surface is dense and smooth, with extremely low porosity (less than 10%), and its capillary pores are of tiny diameter, making it difficult for mold spores to penetrate the interior and survive. Testing shows that Qinglong UHPC material achieves a mold resistance rating of Grade 0 (no mold growth), far superior to traditional materials such as tiles and coatings. In projects in humid regions such as Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi, Qinglong UHPC facade panels have shown no obvious mold growth after years of use.
#Potential Causes of Mold Growth in Humid Regions: Analysis of Key Risk Points Although UHPC itself offers excellent mold resistance, mold growth may still occur under certain conditions. Main causes include: long-term dust and organic stains attached to the surface, providing a nutrient source for mold; aging and cracking of joint sealants, allowing rainwater to seep in and keeping the surface damp for extended periods; poor facade drainage, with standing water lingering on panel surfaces or in joints; and dense vegetation with poor ventilation in the surrounding environment, increasing the probability of mold spore spread and attachment. During maintenance of the Changying Universal 100 Fantasy Park project in Hainan, Qinglong Group found that some UHPC facade panel surfaces in poorly ventilated areas developed a few mold spots due to dust accumulation and the humid environment, confirming the impact of environmental factors.
#Core Mold Prevention Measures: Precise Whole-Process Control Based on the environmental characteristics of humid regions, Qinglong Group has established a whole-process mold prevention and control system of "prevention + treatment." For prevention, first provide good surface protection by applying hydrophobic treatment to UHPC facade panels to reduce surface water absorption and minimize moisture attachment in humid environments; second, optimize the facade drainage design by setting appropriate drainage slopes and drainage channels to ensure rainwater drains away promptly and avoid standing water; meanwhile, select sealants with excellent mold resistance for joints, and regularly inspect and replace aged sealants. For treatment, if a small amount of mold is found, use diluted bleach (5% concentration) or a dedicated anti-mold cleaner, gently scrub with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly with clean water after scrubbing, allow to dry, and then apply hydrophobic treatment; for severe mold contamination, the affected panels and sealants should be replaced promptly.
#Long-Term Maintenance Strategy: Continuously Ensuring Mold Resistance Long-term maintenance is the long-lasting guarantee of mold resistance for UHPC facades in humid regions. Qinglong Group recommends cleaning maintenance for UHPC facades in humid regions every 6-12 months to promptly remove surface dust, fallen leaves, and other organic matter, preventing mold growth. Before each rainy season, conduct a comprehensive inspection focusing on whether the sealants are aging, whether the drainage system is unobstructed, and whether there are signs of mold growth on the surface, addressing any problems promptly. At the same time, maintain good ventilation around the building and keep vegetation from growing too close to the facade to reduce mold spore spread. In the Sanya Festival Plaza project, by implementing this maintenance strategy, Qinglong Group ensured that the UHPC facade remained clean and attractive after years of use in a high-humidity, high-salt environment, free from mold problems.
UHPC facades in humid regions are not prone to mold growth—their inorganic properties and dense structure provide natural advantages for mold resistance. As long as surface protection is properly maintained, the drainage design is optimized, and regular cleaning maintenance is performed, mold growth can be effectively prevented and controlled. With 28 years of industry experience, Qinglong Group provides customized UHPC solutions and full life-cycle maintenance services for projects in humid regions, keeping building facades in good condition for the long term.
