Impact resistance is a key characteristic that distinguishes GRC from ordinary cement products, directly relating to the safety performance of components under accidental loads. According to test data, the impact energy resistance of high-quality GRC can reach 15-25 kJ/m², more than 10 times that of ordinary concrete. This exceptional impact resistance stems from its fiber reinforcement mechanism and toughness properties.
In the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater project, GRC curtain wall panels passed rigorous impact resistance tests: a 500 g steel ball was dropped freely from a height of 2 meters onto the center of the specimen, producing no cracks on the back of the panel and only a 15 mm diameter dent at the impact point. This performance ensures the safety of the curtain wall system under extreme weather or accidental impact. The project's combined reinforcement scheme of hooked-end steel fibers and alkali-resistant glass fibers enables the material to absorb substantial energy through mechanisms such as fiber pull-out and bridging upon impact, significantly improving impact resistance.
Under impact loads, GRC goes through three stages: elastic deformation, microcrack formation, and crack propagation. Fibers form a bridging effect at crack tips, preventing rapid crack propagation. By adjusting fiber types and dosages, the material's impact response characteristics can be optimized. Qinglong's multi-fiber reinforcement system increases impact toughness by 30%.
Tested in accordance with ASTM D7136, under a 10 kJ impact energy, the specimen developed only radial microcracks with no penetrating failure. The residual load-bearing capacity after impact remained above 85%, a performance of significant value in protective engineering.
After 5 consecutive impacts (5 kJ each), the specimen remained intact, with no significant expansion of the damage area at the impact point. This resistance to repeated impacts makes it suitable for locations that may suffer multiple strikes.
After impact damage, the specimen's flexural strength retention remained above 70%, with failure exhibiting ductile characteristics. This performance ensures that components retain a certain safety margin after accidental impacts, allowing time for repair and replacement.
GRC's outstanding impact resistance makes it particularly suitable for crowded venues and critical protective locations. Through material optimization and proper design, this advantage can be fully leveraged.
