GRC has good waterproofing performance, with its water absorption rate typically controlled at 6%-10% and an impermeability grade of P6 or above. This waterproofing performance makes it suitable for outdoor damp environments, but areas subject to long-term immersion require special treatment. Through material optimization and surface treatment, the waterproofing performance of GRC can be further improved.
In a coastal hotel project in Shenzhen, Qinglong GRC cornice panels have withstood 8 years of marine climate exposure with no surface weathering or leakage. The waterproof GRC formulation used in the project, through the addition of hydrophobic agents and densified design, reduced the water absorption rate to below 5%. The specialized waterproof coating applied to the surface further improved water resistance. This comprehensive waterproofing solution ensured the long-term durability of the components in a humid salt-spray environment. Testing showed that after 3000 hours of salt spray testing, specimen strength showed no degradation and there were no signs of surface corrosion.
High-quality GRC has a 24-hour water absorption rate of ≤8% and a 72-hour saturated water absorption rate of ≤12%. By optimizing the mix proportion and curing regime, the water absorption rate can be significantly reduced. A low water absorption rate means better frost resistance and durability.
Tested by standard methods, the impermeability pressure is ≥0.6MPa and the water penetration height is ≤30mm. This impermeability allows GRC to be used on exterior walls, effectively resisting rainwater erosion.
The drying shrinkage value is ≤0.06%, lower than ordinary mortar. By adding expansive agents and reducing water content, shrinkage can be further controlled, reducing drying shrinkage cracks and improving waterproofing.
Surface treatment technologies such as silane impregnation and waterproof coatings can reduce the water absorption rate by more than 50%. These treatments make it possible for GRC to be applied in more demanding environments.
Through rational material design and surface protection, GRC can meet the waterproofing requirements of most buildings. For special areas, composite waterproofing solutions can be adopted to improve reliability.
