What Are the Connection Methods Between GRC Curtain Wall and Main Structure? Analysis of Key Construction Points

In modern architectural design, GRC curtain walls, with their lightweight, high-strength and flexible formability, have become an important choice for balancing architectural aesthetics and function. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group is deeply engaged in material R&D and engineering practice, and profoundly understands that the technical key points of connecting GRC curtain walls to the main structure play a decisive role in project safety and quality. This article systematically analyzes the mainstream connection methods for GRC curtain walls and the core construction key points, providing a professional reference for designers and owners.

The connection method between GRC curtain walls and the main structure must be scientifically selected according to building height, load conditions and styling requirements. Currently, common connection systems can be divided into two major categories: rigid connections and flexible connections. Rigid connections form fixed joints with the main structure through embedded parts and steel brackets, and are suitable for low-rise buildings with stable loads; flexible connections introduce elastic components to absorb thermal deformation and seismic loads, making them the preferred solution for super high-rise buildings. In a landmark project in Nanjing, Qinglong innovatively adopted a "rigid-flexible combined" connection system, which not only ensured the precise positioning of the double-curved GRC curtain wall but also kept displacement within the range permitted by codes through seismic joint design; this technology has been granted a national utility model patent.

Embedded part installation is the foundational work of the connection system, and its quality directly affects curtain wall safety. During the detailed design stage, Qinglong applies BIM technology to simulate embedded part positioning, ensuring no conflict with the rebar of the main structure. During construction, the "three-line control" principle is strictly implemented: axis deviation ≤3mm, plane elevation error ≤5mm, and anchorage depth at least 1.5 times the design value. At the Nanning production base in Guangxi, all embedded parts are verified by salt spray tests to ensure durability of over 50 years. For existing building renovation projects, Qinglong's self-developed post-installed underreamed anchor technology enables rebar-free installation with pull-out force exceeding 20kN, and has been successfully applied in multiple curtain wall renovation projects for historic buildings.

As the intermediate carrier connecting GRC panels with the main structure, the keel system's selection and installation accuracy are of vital importance. Qinglong provides customized keel solutions based on project needs: conventional projects use hot-dip galvanized square steel keels with yield strength ≥345MPa; large-span designs use aluminum alloy profiles with cross-sectional dimensions optimized through structural calculations. During installation, 3D laser scanning technology is used for real-time monitoring, keeping keel positioning errors within ±2mm. In a commercial complex project in Shanghai, Qinglong innovatively adopted dry connections between aluminum alloy hangers and GRC panels, which not only reduced wet work on site but also increased installation efficiency by 40%; this technique has been incorporated into the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018).

Sealing, waterproofing and anti-corrosion treatment are key links in ensuring the long-term performance of GRC curtain walls. In connection joint design, Qinglong adopts a "two-layer waterproofing" system: the first layer is EPDM rubber strip sealing, and the second layer features drainage channels and drain pipes to ensure no rainwater penetration. All metal connectors are hot-dip galvanized with zinc layer thickness ≥85μm; coastal projects additionally receive fluorocarbon coating, with salt spray resistance reaching over 5,000 hours. In a seaside hotel project in Malaysia, through joint anti-corrosion optimization, Qinglong kept the GRC curtain wall rust-free for 15 years in a high-humidity environment, fully verifying the reliability of the technical solution.

A quality control system during construction is the final guarantee for the safety of connection joints. Qinglong has established full-process control standards from material entry to completion acceptance: GRC panels entering the site must be accompanied by test reports showing flexural strength ≥15MPa, and load-bearing capacity sampling tests are conducted before installation; joint construction implements the "three-inspection system" with a supervisory acceptance pass rate of 100%; after completion, on-site water spray tests and structural adhesive compatibility tests are performed. As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong applies digital management throughout the entire construction process, achieving quality traceability of every connection joint through RFID chips. This management model has helped the enterprise obtain the "Provincial Engineering Technology Center" certification. For more industry information: +WeChat qlfsbl123

As architectural design requirements for formal expression continue to rise, GRC curtain wall connection technology is developing toward refinement and integration. As a member of the International GRC Association, Qinglong Group will continue to promote the innovative R&D of connection systems and is currently participating in the formulation of the industry standard General Technical Conditions for Non-load-bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC). In the future, through the composite application of UHPC and GRC, the load-bearing performance and durability of connection joints are expected to be further optimized, providing more possibilities for building envelope design. Choosing a supplier with full-chain service capabilities is key to ensuring the safety and reliability of GRC curtain wall connection systems. With 28 years of engineering practice experience, Qinglong will provide expert-level support for every project, from detailed design to after-sales maintenance.
