How Should Joint Width Be Designed When Installing Decorative Panels to Balance Aesthetics and Practicality

The design of joint width during decorative panel installation is a key element in balancing aesthetics and practicality. Especially for new decorative materials such as UHPC, GRC, GRG, and GRP, a scientific jointing scheme not only prevents cracking and deformation caused by thermal expansion and contraction, but also enhances the overall texture of a building through detail treatment. As Qinglong Group with 28 years of experience in detailed design and construction, we draw on our full-chain service practice to provide designers and owners with professional jointing solutions from three dimensions: material properties, construction environment, and design aesthetics.

1. Material Properties Determine the Jointing Baseline: Differentiated Needs of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP

Differences in the physical properties of materials directly affect joint width design. Take Qinglong UHPC exterior wall panels as an example: with a compressive strength exceeding 150MPa and a coefficient of linear expansion of approximately 10×10⁻⁶/℃, expansion joints of 5-8mm should be reserved in regions with large temperature differences, paired with elastic sealant for dynamic buffering. GRC decorative lines contain glass fiber reinforced layers, offering flexibility superior to traditional cement products; conventional joint width can be controlled at 3-5mm, but pattern continuity at joints must be considered when used for European classical shapes. GRG ceiling material features light weight and high strength; in indoor environments with large humidity variations (such as swimming halls and hot spring hotels), a joint width of no less than 2mm is recommended to avoid deformation caused by moisture penetration. GRP daylighting canopies require consideration of the material's thermal deformation; the joint width must be calculated based on the span, typically 1/1000 of the span and no less than 8mm, to ensure structural safety. 2. Refined Jointing Requirements Imposed by Construction Environment and Techniques

Joint design must be dynamically adjusted according to installation scenarios and construction techniques. In municipal subway projects, Qinglong GRC cladding panel installation adopts 3D laser scanning positioning technology, using BIM models to pre-simulate joint positions and control errors within ±1mm, which both satisfies structural seismic requirements and ensures visual uniformity. UHPC curtain walls of commercial complexes adopt an "invisible joint" technique, compressing the joint width to 2mm and filling with color-matched sealant to achieve a "seamless" visual effect, while internal drainage channels are installed to solve waterproofing issues. For overseas projects (such as GRP roofing at Malaysian airports), ultraviolet aging in tropical climates must also be considered: joint width is increased by 20% compared to domestic standards, and silicone sealant with weather resistance of more than 20 years is selected.

3. Balancing Aesthetics and Function: Advanced Joint Design Techniques

Advanced joint design should become part of the architectural language. In Qinglong's translucent concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, joint width was integrated with lighting design: LED light strips were embedded through 3mm joints, presenting refined dividing lines by day and flowing light bands by night, winning the AALBORG WHITE Cup UHPC Innovation Award. For museum GRG curved walls, a "stone-imitation tight joint" technique was adopted with a joint width of only 1.5mm; precise polishing aligns the joints with the direction of the texture, achieving a "monolithic casting" visual effect. In addition, joint shapes can also be innovative, such as using wedge-shaped joints to enhance the three-dimensional effect of GRC components, or using gradient joint widths to accommodate the curvature changes of hyperbolic GRP shapes, achieving unity of technology and art. As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in industry standard setting, Qinglong has always believed that joint width design is a systematic project involving materials, structure, and aesthetics. Through 28 years of accumulated full-chain experience, we have developed a jointing solution system covering material testing, BIM detailing, and on-site installation, having served more than a thousand projects including those of Poly and China Overseas. Going forward, Qinglong will continue its mission of "creating beautiful architecture," providing designers with more innovative jointing technical support, so that every joint becomes a plus for building quality.
