How Many Orders of Magnitude Higher Is UHPC Impermeability Than Ordinary C80 Concrete — A Comparative Analysis Based on Material Properties and Experimental Data

In the field of contemporary building materials, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) has become a new favorite for high-end projects thanks to its outstanding mechanical properties and durability, and its impermeability—a key indicator of long-term material stability—has drawn close attention from designers and owners. From the dual perspectives of material characteristics and experimental data, this article provides an in-depth analysis of UHPC's impermeability advantages over ordinary C80 concrete, offering a professional reference for material selection in construction projects.

As a representative of high-strength concrete, ordinary C80 concrete typically achieves an impermeability grade of P12 (i.e., it can withstand 1.2MPa of water pressure) and is widely used in high-rise building pile foundations, bridge structures, and similar applications. However, in humid environments, underground works, or coastal areas, the capillary pore structure of ordinary concrete easily allows water penetration, causing problems such as steel reinforcement corrosion and structural cracking. By contrast, UHPC achieves a highly densified microstructure through optimized particle gradation (maximum particle size usually ≤5mm), the addition of steel fibers or ultra-fine silica fume, and high-pressure forming processes. Experimental data show that UHPC can reach an impermeability grade of P25 or above, with some special formulations even exceeding P40; its permeability coefficient is only 1/100 to 1/1000 that of ordinary C80 concrete—an improvement of 2-3 orders of magnitude—making it a true “liquid barrier” material.

This leap in impermeability stems from UHPC's unique material composition and process innovations. First, the synergistic reactions of cementitious materials in UHPC—such as cement, silica fume, and mineral powder—generate abundant hydration products that fill the pores found in traditional concrete; second, the three-dimensional randomly oriented distribution of steel fibers not only enhances material toughness but also interrupts the continuity of penetration paths; finally, steam curing or autoclave curing further promotes thorough hydration reactions, raising material compactness above 98%. Qinglong, a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of experience in UHPC detailed design and production, keeps UHPC's impermeability performance stable at the P30 level through its independently developed “ultra-dense gradation optimization technology.” In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, its translucent UHPC components remained intact after 3 years of rain erosion, verifying the material's long-term reliability.

From an engineering practice perspective, the improvement in UHPC's impermeability translates directly into lower whole-life-cycle project costs. Taking underground utility tunnels as an example, using UHPC precast components can reduce waterproofing membrane installation procedures and shorten the construction period by more than 30%; in coastal building facade applications, UHPC cladding panels can effectively resist chloride ion penetration, extending structural durability by more than 50 years. Qinglong is deeply engaged in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field. Backed by an annual production capacity of 600,000 square meters at its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, it can provide customers with full-chain services from material selection to construction and installation, and its participation in drafting the industry standard “General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)” has further promoted the standardization of impermeability testing methods. For designers and owners, choosing UHPC is not only a performance upgrade but also a revolution in architectural philosophy. In a coastal cultural center project in Shenzhen, the double-curved facades Qinglong created with UHPC both satisfied the architects' pursuit of free-form aesthetics and withstood the erosion of a high-salt-spray environment thanks to outstanding impermeability. Compared with traditional materials, UHPC improves building safety and extends service life while achieving the sustainable development goals of green architecture through reduced maintenance costs. As a vice-chairman unit of the China GRC Association, Qinglong has always upheld “creating beautiful architecture” as its mission, perfectly integrating material performance with artistic expression and setting a benchmark of technological innovation and quality commitment for the industry.
