Common Mold Materials for UHPC Components: Advantages and Selection Points

In the production of UHPC components, molds serve as key forming carriers, and the choice of mold material directly affects product precision, surface quality, and manufacturing costs. As an industry leader with 28 years of experience in detailed design and production of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group draws on its full-chain service practice to provide you with an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, advantages, and scientific selection strategies of commonly used mold materials for UHPC components.

I. Steel Molds: The Industry Benchmark for High Precision and Durability

With high strength (tensile strength ≥450MPa), low deformation rate (≤0.1mm/m), and excellent surface finish (Ra≤1.6μm), steel molds have become the first choice for large-scale production of UHPC components. Their advantage lies in the precise replication of complex shapes. For example, in the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, the light-transmitting UHPC components produced by Qinglong with custom steel molds successfully reproduced the 0.5mm-precision texture details specified in the design drawings. In addition, steel molds offer a service life of over 500 uses, making them particularly suitable for large-batch standardized component production for landmark buildings, commercial complexes, and the like. Key selection points include mold splicing precision (gaps ≤0.2mm) and anti-rust treatment processes. Through laser welding and electrophoretic coating technologies, Qinglong ensures that molds maintain stable performance even in humid production environments.

II. GRP Molds: The Ideal Choice for Complex Curved Shapes

GRP (glass-reinforced thermosetting plastic) molds stand out in the manufacture of irregularly shaped UHPC components thanks to their lightweight nature (density 1.8-2.0g/cm³) and high forming flexibility. For example, for the double-curved exterior wall panels of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong leveraged the moldable characteristics of GRP molds to complete the production of complex-shaped components at only 1/3 of the cost of traditional steel molds. After surface treatment with nano-scale release agents, they can achieve a mirror finish (glossiness ≥90°) with demolding resistance ≤5N. When selecting, attention should be paid to the resin type: unsaturated polyester resin is suitable for room-temperature molding, while epoxy resin molds can withstand thermal curing environments above 120°C. The composite resin molds developed by Qinglong have been successfully applied to the production of heat-resistant UHPC components for an airport project in Saudi Arabia.

III. Wooden Molds: A Trade-off Choice for Low-Cost Temporary Solutions

Multi-layer birch plywood molds feature low material cost (about 1/5 that of steel molds) and easy processing, making them suitable for small-batch custom components or process verification stages. In a garden landscape project in Malaysia, Qinglong used wooden molds with epoxy resin boards laminated on the surface to successfully produce uniquely shaped UHPC benches. However, their limitations should be noted: service life is typically ≤50 uses, and they are susceptible to environmental humidity (moisture content variation must be controlled within 8%-12%). It is recommended to use them together with waterproof primer and steel frame reinforcement to avoid wood grain marks or dimensional deviations on component surfaces.

IV. A Three-Dimensional Evaluation System for Mold Material Selection

Based on 28 years of engineering practice, Qinglong has established a three-dimensional "precision-cost-efficiency" selection model: for key appearance components of high-end projects such as grand theaters and museums, steel molds are prioritized to guarantee 0.1mm-level precision; for small-batch products such as irregular sculptures in theme parks, GRP molds can be used to balance cost and shaping requirements; while for temporary municipal landscape installations, wooden molds can be considered to reduce upfront investment. At the same time, decisions should be made comprehensively in light of production cycles (steel mold fabrication takes about 15-20 days, GRP molds 7-10 days) and component complexity. Through BIM parametric design and shared mold libraries, Qinglong can shorten mold development cycles by more than 30%.

As an enterprise that participated in formulating the industry standard "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)," Qinglong has always upheld the mission of "creating beautiful architecture," helping designers bring their creative visions to life through scientific mold material selection and process innovation. In its full-chain services from detailed material design to after-sales maintenance, the continuous refinement of mold technology is one of Qinglong's core competitive strengths in becoming a leader in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP niche segments. Choosing the right mold material not only ensures production efficiency but also lays the foundation for the precise presentation of architectural aesthetics.
