What MPa Should Quality GRC Flexural Strength Reach? Industry Standard Analysis

In the field of architectural decorative materials, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become the ideal choice for high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and landmark buildings, thanks to its lightweight, high-strength, and flexible formability. Among its properties, flexural strength, as the core indicator for measuring the structural safety and durability of GRC, has always been the focus of attention for designers, owners, and contractors. Drawing on industry standards and 28 years of professional experience, this article provides an in-depth analysis of the flexural strength standards of premium GRC and the factors influencing it, offering an authoritative reference for project material selection.

I. Industry Standards and Performance Requirements for GRC Flexural Strength

According to the "Technical Standard for Building Applications of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)" (JGJ/T423-2018), the flexural strength of GRC products should be no less than 12MPa. Premium GRC products, especially those used in load-bearing applications such as exterior wall cladding panels and special-shaped components, typically require a flexural strength of 20MPa or above. This difference in indicators directly reflects the level of material formulation, production technology, and quality control. For example, Qinglong uses high-purity rapid-hardening sulfoaluminate cement combined with alkali-resistant glass fiber in GRC production, and through an automated spray-up molding process, the flexural strength of its products is stably maintained at 22-25MPa, far exceeding the industry baseline standard.

II. Key Factors Affecting GRC Flexural Strength

1. Material Ratio and Fiber Content: The dosage and uniform dispersion of glass fiber are the core determinants of flexural strength. Premium industry players such as Qinglong strictly control fiber volume content at 4-5% and use imported alkali-resistant glass fiber to ensure the interfacial bond strength between fiber and cement matrix. In contrast, some small factories reduce fiber usage to cut costs, resulting in products with flexural strength below 15MPa and posing safety hazards.

2. Production Process and Curing Regime: The spray-up molding process enables oriented fiber distribution, significantly improving flexural performance, while molded or hand-formed products have poorer fiber dispersion and greater strength fluctuation. Meanwhile, control of steam curing temperature and duration is crucial—Qinglong adopts constant-temperature curing at 60°C for 24 hours, allowing full cement hydration and a denser structure, increasing flexural strength by 30% compared with natural curing.

3. Thickness and Reinforcement Design: For large-span components (such as sunshades and decorative cornices), flexural capacity needs to be enhanced by increasing thickness or embedding steel mesh. Take a convention and exhibition center project undertaken by Qinglong as an example: the GRC cladding panel with a 1200mm span was designed with a thickness of 25mm and combined with 5mm-diameter steel mesh, achieving a measured flexural strength of 28MPa, meeting the dual requirements of wind pressure load and dead load.

III. Flexural Strength Testing and Engineering Application Recommendations

When selecting materials for a project, it is recommended to verify GRC flexural strength from three aspects: First, require the manufacturer to provide third-party testing reports, focusing on "three-point bending test" data; second, examine the company's production scale and laboratory capabilities—for example, Qinglong owns a provincial-level engineering technology center capable of monitoring the strength indicators of each batch of products in real time; finally, refer to similar project cases. For example, a landmark building in Nanjing adopted Qinglong GRC curtain wall panels; after 8 years of exposure to wind and rain, the flexural strength decay rate was below 5%, verifying the long-term stability of the material.

For designers and owners, flexural strength indicators should be reasonably set according to the application scenario: exterior wall cladding panels are recommended at ≥20MPa, landscape garden components at ≥15MPa, while non-load-bearing components such as European-style decorative moldings may be appropriately reduced to 12-15MPa. Meanwhile, choosing a manufacturer with full-chain service capabilities (such as Qinglong, which provides integrated services from detailed design to after-sales maintenance) allows comprehensive costs to be reduced through structural calculation optimization and installation process improvement while ensuring strength.

As an enterprise that participated in the revision of the "GRC Decorative Products" standard (JC/T940-2022), Qinglong has always upheld a meticulous and excellence-driven attitude, treating core indicators such as flexural strength as the bottom line of quality control. In the future, with the development of UHPC/GRC composite technology, flexural strength will further break through 30MPa, providing safer and more creative solutions for architectural decoration. Choosing premium GRC is not only a guarantee of engineering quality but also a long-term investment in architectural aesthetics and durability.
