In the field of architectural decoration materials, GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) and GRG (Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum) are two commonly used glass fiber reinforced materials frequently included in the selection range by design and engineering teams. However, the two differ significantly in core performance, and these differences directly determine their suitability for different scenarios. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will analyze the core differences between the two from the perspective of key performance indicators, helping designers and owners achieve precise material selection.
1. Base Material Characteristics: The Fundamental Difference Between Cement-Based and Gypsum-Based
GRC uses cement as its base material, mixed with alkali-resistant glass fibers and fine aggregates to form a composite material combining strength and toughness; GRG uses gypsum as its main raw material, with chopped glass fibers added to improve flexural performance. The difference in base materials creates the most fundamental performance divide: GRC's compressive strength can reach over 40MPa, with flexural strength generally exceeding 15MPa, while GRG's compressive strength is typically only 5-10MPa, with flexural strength of about 3-5MPa. This gap makes GRC more suitable for load-bearing or semi-load-bearing components such as exterior walls and curtain walls, such as shaped cladding panels for landmark buildings; GRG is better suited for interior non-load-bearing decorative shapes, such as theater ceilings and walls.
2. Environmental Adaptability: Performance Boundaries of Weather Resistance and Moisture Resistance
Weather resistance is GRC's core advantage. Its cement base material, after special process treatment, can withstand temperature changes from -40℃ to 70℃ and more than 200 freeze-thaw cycles, and has excellent UV aging resistance, which enables GRC to maintain structural stability for more than 20 years in outdoor environments. It is widely used in scenarios such as commercial complex exterior walls and landscape components. In contrast, GRG's gypsum base material is hygroscopic and prone to softening and deformation in environments with humidity above 75%, so it is more suitable for dry interior spaces, such as atrium designs in star-rated hotels and music hall interior walls.
3. Shaping Capability and Surface Texture: Technical Support for Artistic Expression
Both offer excellent shaping freedom, but their technical approaches differ. Through spray molding and mold casting, GRC can achieve ultra-large components up to 10 meters in maximum size and accurately reproduce complex textures such as European moldings and reliefs, with surfaces that can be treated to various textures such as faux stone and faux wood. For example, the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, in which Qinglong participated, used GRC to achieve a fusion of classical and modern styles. GRG, leveraging gypsum's flowability advantages, performs better in details such as double-curved surfaces and hollow-out shapes, with a minimum radius of curvature controllable within 300mm and surface fineness reaching mirror level, commonly used for artistic ceilings and wall decorations in high-end interiors.
4. Fire and Acoustic Performance: Differentiated Fulfillment of Functional Requirements
In terms of fire performance, both GRC and GRG meet Class A non-combustible standards, but GRG slowly decomposes at high temperatures and releases crystal water, providing a certain heat-absorbing and flame-retardant effect, making it more suitable for public places with strict fire protection requirements. In terms of acoustic performance, GRG's porous structure gives it an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) above 0.9, effectively absorbing sound waves, making it an ideal acoustic decorative material for concert halls and conference centers; GRC, with its higher density, is more suitable as a base material for sound barriers, such as sound barrier systems for subway tracks.
As a leading domestic UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP custom manufacturer, Qinglong Group believes that material selection must be based on the project's environmental characteristics, functional requirements, and artistic expression. GRC, with its high strength and weather resistance, is the preferred choice for outdoor architectural decoration, while GRG stands out in the interior decoration field with its fine texture and acoustic advantages. Through full-chain detailed design and technical support, Qinglong can provide expert solutions from material selection to construction implementation according to specific project needs, allowing each material to maximize its value in the appropriate scenario.
