In contemporary architectural design, the deconstructivist style represented by Zaha Hadid, with its flowing curves and nonlinear forms, has become an important language for shaping urban landmarks. GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete), as the core material for realizing such complex forms, often faces multiple technical challenges during construction. As an industry-leading enterprise with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group draws on the practice of hundreds of landmark projects to deeply analyze the construction difficulties of "Zaha-style" GRC forms and their systematic solutions.
1. Curved Surface Precision Control: Millimeter-Level Challenges from Digital Model to Physical Forming
The signature double-curved and twisted forms of the Zaha style impose stringent requirements on the dimensional precision of GRC components. Traditional manual mold-making processes struggle to meet the ±3mm tolerance control standard, while Qinglong achieves seamless transformation from design model to production mold through a combination of "parametric design + 3D-printed formers". Taking a cultural center project as an example, where the minimum single-curvature radius was only 280mm, topological optimization was performed using Rhino and Grasshopper software, combined with CNC-carved high-density foam formers, keeping component forming errors within 2mm and laying the foundation for subsequent installation.
2. Material Performance Matching: Balancing Strength and Toughness Under Dynamic Loads
Large-span cantilevered GRC components must simultaneously meet the dual requirements of structural load-bearing and visual lightness. Qinglong's self-developed C80-grade GRC formulation, by adjusting glass fiber content (6-8% by volume) and composite reinforcement with basalt fiber, increases flexural strength to 22MPa, 15% higher than the industry standard. In a commercial complex project in Shenzhen, for ribbon-shaped components with a cantilever length of 4.5 meters, a "GRC + UHPC rib" composite structure was adopted, meeting the 1/300 deflection requirement while keeping self-weight within 180kg/㎡, a 60% weight reduction compared with traditional stone curtain walls.
3. Installation Process Innovation: 3D Spatial Positioning and Dynamic Adjustment Technology
On-site installation is a critical step in ensuring the perfect presentation of "Zaha-style" GRC forms. Qinglong's proprietary "3D laser scanning + BIM pre-assembly" technology establishes an on-site coordinate system using a Leica TS60 total station, keeping component installation errors within 5mm. In a grand theater project, for 368 irregularly shaped GRC curtain wall panels, a "modular lifting unit" scheme was adopted, decomposing components weighing up to 800kg each into 3 lifting units. Together with an adjustable stainless steel bracket system enabling fine-tuning in three dimensions and six directions, precise assembly was ultimately completed with errors not exceeding 3mm.
4. Joint Treatment and Durability Assurance: Technical Breakthroughs in Concealed Construction
The joint treatment of complex curved surfaces directly affects the building's overall visual effect and service life. Qinglong's developed "double-sealing + flexible connection" process uses water-swelling sealant on the inner side and silicone weather-resistant sealant on the outer side, combined with EPDM foam rods to form an elastic buffer layer. In an ice and snow theme pavilion project in Harbin, this process successfully withstood extreme temperature differences from -30℃ to 40℃; after 5 years of monitoring, no cracking or leakage occurred at the joints. Meanwhile, RFID chips embedded in GRC components establish a full life-cycle traceability system, providing data support for later maintenance.
As an enterprise that participated in drafting the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong Group has always driven industry development through technological innovation. From the award-winning GRC curtain wall at the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center to the translucent UHPC components at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, 28 years of technical accumulation have given Qinglong unique advantages in realizing complex forms. In the future, with the deep integration of BIM technology and intelligent construction, GRC materials will provide a solid realization path for more architectural art dreams, and Qinglong will continue its mission of "creating beautiful architecture", promoting the infinite possibilities of new decorative materials in the field of architectural aesthetics.
