The joint width design for decorative panel installation may seem like a minor detail, but it is in fact a key factor affecting both the architectural decorative effect and structural stability. Especially for new decorative materials such as UHPC, GRC, GRG, and GRP, a scientific and reasonable joint scheme concerns not only aesthetics but also the long-term performance of the materials. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of experience in design development and construction, will analyze the core logic and practical methods of joint design for designers and owners from three dimensions: material characteristics, environmental factors, and construction techniques.
I. Material Characteristics Determine the Joint Baseline: From Physical Properties to Process Adaptation
Differences in the thermal expansion coefficients and elastic moduli of different decorative materials are the primary basis for joint width design. Take Qinglong UHPC decorative panels as an example: with a compressive strength of over 150MPa and a linear expansion coefficient of approximately 10×10⁻⁶/℃, a single 6-meter panel can expand or contract by up to 7.2mm in curtain wall applications with large temperature differences. Therefore, a joint width of 8-10mm must be reserved to meet deformation requirements. GRC materials, thanks to their glass fiber reinforcement layers, have an elastic modulus 30% higher than traditional cement products; when installing European-style moldings, the horizontal joint can be controlled at 5-8mm, ensuring continuous shaping while avoiding cracking.
GRG, as a mainstream interior decoration material, is often used for curved shapes such as theater ceilings, and its gypsum-based properties make it more sensitive to humidity changes. In a concert hall project in Nanjing, Qinglong adopted a "stepped joint method" for the GRG hyperbolic ceiling: main joints of 6mm width with elastic sealant, and secondary joints of 3mm filled with fire-resistant rock wool, which met acoustic requirements while releasing temperature and humidity stresses through joint division. GRP materials, with their excellent weather resistance, were used in a landmark project at Singapore's Marina Bay, where outdoor sunshade panels required only 4mm joints to cope with the year-round hot and humid environment.
II. Environmental Factors Create Joint Variables: Dual Considerations of Regional Climate and Building Function
Climate zoning is an important parameter in joint design. Through analysis of data from 300+ projects nationwide, Qinglong's technical team found that GRC exterior wall panels in severely cold northern regions (such as Harbin) require joint widths 20%-30% larger than those in South China (such as Guangzhou), with typical values of 12-15mm, together with multi-layer sealed waterproof construction. In tropical regions such as Hainan, UHPC decorative panels must also account for typhoon loads; the joint depth should be no less than 1/3 of the panel thickness to ensure that the anchoring system and the joint space work together under load.
Differences in building functions also affect joint schemes. For the GRP daylighting roofs of commercial complexes that prioritize transparency, Qinglong adopted a "hidden joint + drainage slope" design with 5mm joints and V-shaped cross-sections, ensuring visual continuity while achieving self-drainage. The GRC relief walls of museums emphasize cultural expression; through 2mm micro-joints combined with color-matched sealant, the overall integrity of the ornamental patterns remains unaffected by joint division. For GRG walls in subway projects, Qinglong innovatively applied "adjustable joints," allowing ±3mm of installation error absorption through embedded slide channels, greatly improving construction efficiency.
III. Construction Techniques Ensure Joint Precision: Full-Chain Control from Design Development to Site Management
Precise joint design relies on the in-depth application of BIM technology. In the GRC project of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, Qinglong used Rhino parametric modeling to preview joint positions, keeping the joint errors of more than 2,000 special-shaped components within ±1mm. During production, dedicated mold positioning pins ensure that the dimensional deviation of joint grooves is ≤0.5mm; during installation, 3D laser scanning is used to calibrate joint width and flatness in real time, combined with customized elastic spacer blocks, achieving "millimeter-level" precision control.
The choice of joint materials is equally critical. Tests by Qinglong's Technical Center show that outdoor GRC joints should use silicone weather-resistant sealant (movement capability ±25%), indoor GRG joints can use modified acrylic sealant (environmental grade E0), while UHPC panels, due to their high rigidity, require a combined construction of polysulfide sealant and foam backer rods. At the Nanning production base, every batch of sealant undergoes high-low temperature cycling tests from -40℃ to 80℃ to ensure the durability of the joint system in extreme environments.
As a national high-tech enterprise and a drafting unit of the GRC industry standard, Qinglong Group has always believed that joint design for decorative panels is an organic unity of material science, structural mechanics, and aesthetic art. From supporting projects of the Beijing Winter Olympics to a commercial complex beside the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, Qinglong has leveraged its 28 years of full-chain experience to transform jointing, a "project of details," into the "finishing touch" that elevates building quality. In the future, as UHPC, GRG, and other materials are applied in more landmark projects, scientific joint design will become one of the core indicators for measuring the professionalism of decoration engineering.
