In the field of modern architectural decoration, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete), with its outstanding mechanical properties and aesthetic expressiveness, has become an ideal choice for exterior wall cladding panels of high-end buildings such as grand theaters, convention centers, and commercial complexes. However, the joint treatment of UHPC curtain wall panels is a key factor affecting a building's waterproofing, durability, and overall aesthetics, making the selection and application of sealants a core concern for designers, owners, and contractors. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, draws on the practice of more than a thousand projects to provide the industry with a professional sealant selection guide and an analysis of key application points.
I. Core Performance Requirements for UHPC Curtain Wall Panel Sealants
UHPC curtain wall panels feature high strength, minimal deformation, and strong weather resistance, which place special demands on sealants. First, elastic recovery capability is fundamental; it must accommodate the slight displacement of curtain wall panels under temperature changes and wind pressure loads, preventing cracking caused by rigid restraint. Second, weather resistance must adapt to different regional climates, such as high temperature and humidity or severe cold and freezing environments, ensuring no aging or cracking over long-term use. In addition, adhesion performance must form a firm bond with the UHPC substrate while remaining compatible with other materials it may contact, such as metal connectors and insulation layers. Qinglong found, while participating in the formulation of the industry standard "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)," that the elastic modulus of high-quality sealants should be controlled at 0.4-0.6 MPa, with a movement capability of no less than ±25%, in order to effectively address the structural characteristics of UHPC curtain walls.
II. Comparison of Mainstream Sealant Types and Selection Recommendations
Currently, there are three main types of sealants suitable for UHPC curtain wall panels on the market: silicone sealants, polyurethane sealants, and polysulfide sealants. With their excellent weather resistance and UV resistance, silicone sealants are the first choice for outdoor curtain walls, particularly suitable for coastal areas, high-altitude regions, and other places with harsh climates, with a service life of over 20 years. Polyurethane sealants stand out in elastic recovery and bonding strength, making them suitable for joints of large panels with high displacement requirements, and they offer good paintability to match the diverse surface treatment needs of UHPC. Although polysulfide sealants are lower in price, their weather resistance is weaker, making them more suitable for temporary sealing of interior or non-exposed areas. Verified by Qinglong's technical team through projects such as the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation, silicone structural sealants perform best in UHPC translucent concrete curtain walls, while high-performance polyurethane sealants offer greater advantages in the joints of profiled UHPC sunshade panels.
III. Key Technical Points for Sealant Application on UHPC Curtain Wall Panels
Even with the right sealant, improper application techniques can still lead to problems such as leakage and debonding. During the detailed design stage, Qinglong focuses on the following aspects: joint design should reserve a reasonable width (typically 8-15mm) and depth, adopting a "backing + sealant" double-layer construction, with closed-cell foam rods selected as the backing material to avoid three-sided adhesion; surface treatment requires special cleaners to remove release agents, oil stains, and loose dust from the UHPC panel surface to ensure effective wetting by the sealant; the sealant application process adopts "wet application," ensuring full and continuous sealant joints while avoiding air bubbles and voids. After application, the sealant must be tooled into a concave arc surface with special tools before skinning to enhance waterproofing and aesthetics. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong used BIM technology to simulate the stress state of sealant joints, combined with 3D laser scanning positioning, achieving "zero-error" sealing of UHPC curtain wall panel joints. The project won the Silver Award of the first GRC Construction Engineering Innovation Award (AALBORG WHITE Cup).
IV. Industry Trends and Qinglong's Full-Chain Service Advantages
With the widespread application of UHPC materials in building skins, sealant technology is also developing toward low modulus, high movement capability, and environmental friendliness. As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in industry standard formulation, Qinglong not only provides recommendations for sealant products that meet international standards, but can also get involved from the detailed design stage, offering customized joint solutions based on project requirements. From material selection and node design to construction guidance and after-sales maintenance, Qinglong relies on its annual production capacity of 600,000 square meters at its production base in Nanning, Guangxi, and a nationwide service network to provide customers with "one-stop" service. Whether for domestic landmark buildings or overseas projects in Malaysia, Australia, and other countries, Qinglong always maintains a meticulous, excellence-pursuing attitude to ensure the long-term reliability of UHPC curtain wall panel joint treatment, helping to fulfill its corporate mission of "creating aesthetically beautiful architecture."
