Common Mold Materials for UHPC Components: Advantages and Selection Recommendations

As the key carrier for forming UHPC components, the choice of mold material directly affects product precision, surface quality, and production efficiency. Through Qinglong's 28 years of UHPC detailed design and manufacturing practice, we have found that different mold materials each have their own advantages and must be selected scientifically according to project requirements. From the perspective of an experienced industry supplier, the following analyzes the characteristics and application strategies of four mainstream mold materials.

I. Steel Molds: The Long-Lasting Choice for Industrial-Grade Precision

As the "heavy equipment" of UHPC component production, steel molds, with their high strength (tensile strength ≥450MPa) and excellent stability, have become the first choice for large-volume standard components. The CNC-machined steel molds equipped at Qinglong's Nanning production base can achieve dimensional precision control at the 0.1mm level, making them particularly suitable for standardized projects such as exterior wall panels of commercial complexes and sunshade components of metro stations. After chrome plating, their surfaces can achieve a smoothness of Ra1.6μm, giving UHPC components a mirror-like finish. However, the initial investment in steel molds is relatively high (about 5-8 times that of wooden molds), making them more suitable for scaled production of 500 pieces or more, and they have performed outstandingly in strategic centralized procurement projects of real estate groups such as Poly and China Overseas.

II. GRP Molds: The Artistic Carrier for Free-Form Shapes

GRP (glass-reinforced thermosetting plastic) molds, with their outstanding shape-reproduction capability, have become the ideal choice for hyperbolic curtain walls of grand theaters and relief components of museums. Qinglong's GRP molds made with the vacuum infusion process can precisely replicate complex textures, achieving a minimum radius of curvature of 300mm and perfectly presenting designers' creative visions. In small and medium batch projects such as GRG ceilings and landscape features, wooden molds demonstrate unique advantages. However, care should be taken to control ambient humidity (recommended 40%-60%) to prevent mold deformation from affecting UHPC component precision.

IV. Aluminum Alloy Molds: The Balanced Choice for Lightweight High Precision

With a low density of 2.7g/cm³ and a yield strength of 110MPa, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy molds are emerging in fields such as long-span UHPC daylighting roofs and irregular sunshade panels.
