Is UHPC Production Complex? An In-Depth Analysis of Its Technical Challenges and Process Workflow

In the field of contemporary architecture, Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), with its outstanding mechanical properties and artistic expressiveness, is becoming the "new favorite" of landmark buildings. However, is its production process really as complex as rumored? As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will provide an in-depth analysis of UHPC's technical challenges and standardized production processes from the dual perspectives of materials science and engineering practice, offering professional reference for designers and owners.

I. Core Technical Barriers to UHPC Production: From Material Formulation to Microstructure

The complexity of UHPC is first reflected in the precise control of its material system. Compared with ordinary concrete, it requires mixing multiple components such as steel fibers, ultra-fine silica fume, and quartz sand in strict proportions, with the water-binder ratio controlled below 0.2, which places extremely high demands on raw material purity (e.g., SiO₂ content in silica fume ≥92%) and grading continuity. Through its independently developed "multi-scale particle packing model," Qinglong Group has achieved densification of the material's microstructure, enabling products to stably exceed 150MPa in compressive strength and reach over 25MPa in flexural strength—technical parameters that have reached the internationally advanced level.

II. Full-Process Analysis: From Laboratory Formulation to Engineering Application

The UHPC production process covers four key stages:
1. Material pretreatment stage: Steel fibers require surface modification treatment (such as copper plating) to ensure interfacial bonding strength with the matrix; quartz sand must undergo three-stage screening, with particle size controlled within the 0.15-0.6mm range. The fully automatic screening system at Qinglong Group's Guangxi production base achieves raw material precision control of ±0.02mm.
2. Mixing and molding process: A twin-shaft forced mixer is used with staged material feeding (3 minutes of dry mixing first, followed by 5 minutes of wet mixing) to ensure uniform dispersion of steel fibers (dispersion degree ≥95%). For specially shaped components, the vacuum casting technology developed by Qinglong effectively reduces air bubbles, raising the apparent density to 2400kg/m³.
3. Curing system innovation: Breaking through the limitations of traditional curing, a combined "steam curing + autoclave curing" process is adopted. After 24 hours of curing in an 80℃ steam environment, components are transferred to 1.2MPa autoclave curing, allowing early strength to reach 90% of the design value within 7 days and significantly shortening the production cycle.
4. Quality inspection system: Each batch of products must pass 12 test indicators, including ultrasonic flaw detection (defect detection rate ≥98%) and chloride ion penetration coefficient testing (≤1.0×10⁻¹²m/s). The digital quality traceability system established by Qinglong Group enables full life-cycle monitoring from raw materials to finished products.

III. Challenges in Engineering Application and Qinglong's Solutions

The complexity of UHPC is reflected not only in the production stage but also in the technical transformation from laboratory formulation to engineering implementation. For example, in the renovation project of Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, Qinglong Group needed to produce light-transmitting UHPC components only 20mm thick. By adjusting the optical fiber arrangement density (120 fibers/m²) and the matrix light transmittance (≥85%), the design effect of "translucent by day, glowing by night" was successfully achieved, and the project won the Silver Award of the first UHPC Building Engineering Innovation Award under the AALBORG WHITE Cup. To address shrinkage cracking in long-span components, the "gradient reinforcement technology" developed by Qinglong enables components exceeding 6 meters in length to maintain stability, and this technology has been applied to multiple landmark projects such as the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center.

The UHPC production process is undoubtedly a dual test of materials science and engineering technology, but behind its complexity lies a leap in performance and the liberation of design freedom. As a national high-tech enterprise and a participant in the development of UHPC industry standards, Qinglong Group has, through 28 years of technical accumulation, built full-chain service capabilities from detailed design to after-sales maintenance, with an annual production capacity of 600,000 square meters. Whether for the double-curved curtain walls of grand theaters or the free-form decorations of commercial complexes, Qinglong consistently upholds the philosophy of "meticulousness and the relentless pursuit of excellence," transforming UHPC's technical complexity into unlimited possibilities of architectural aesthetics and providing the industry with trustworthy, expert-level solutions.
