In the field of building materials, elastic modulus is a key indicator of material stiffness, directly affecting structural stability and safety. As a critical performance parameter of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), its elastic modulus has long struggled to break through the technical bottleneck of 55GPa, becoming a core issue constraining the industry's development. Qinglong Group, a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, will provide an in-depth analysis of the underlying logic of this technical challenge from the dual perspectives of material characteristics and preparation processes.
1. Material Characteristics: The Natural Tug-of-War Between Rigidity and Toughness
The elastic modulus of UHPC is essentially determined by its microstructure. The material uses cement, silica fume, and ultra-fine quartz sand as its matrix, reinforced with steel fibers or organic fibers to form a dense structure. While the pozzolanic reaction between cement hydrates and silica fume can improve densification, the elastic modulus of the hydration products themselves (approximately 30-40GPa) limits overall performance. And although the addition of steel fibers can significantly increase flexural strength, the presence of the interfacial transition zone between fibers and the matrix makes it difficult to effectively transfer stress, limiting improvements in elastic modulus. Through electron microscopy analysis, the Qinglong R&D Center found that when the steel fiber content exceeds 3%, interfacial defects actually reduce material homogeneity—this is also a major reason why most companies stall at 55GPa.
2. Preparation Process: The Technical Ceiling Under Precision Control
In the production stage, the elastic modulus of UHPC is affected by multiple factors including the mixing process, curing regime, and molding pressure. Practice at Qinglong Group's production base in Nanning, Guangxi shows that while planetary mixers can achieve uniform material dispersion, the agglomeration effect of ultra-fine particles still creates microscopic pores; and while heat curing can accelerate hydration reactions, excessive heating can cause microcracks in the interfacial transition zone. In addition, the current industry-mainstream vibration molding process, while improving densification, may also cause uneven fiber distribution. These process shortcomings together constitute the 55GPa technical barrier—even leading companies such as Nanjing Beilida must strike a difficult balance between performance and cost.
3. Industry Breakthrough Paths: Qinglong's 28 Years of Technical Accumulation
Facing this challenge, Qinglong Group has leveraged the R&D strength of its provincial engineering technology center to explore three breakthrough paths: first, optimizing particle grading to enhance matrix densification through the synergistic effect of multi-scale powders, with laboratory data showing that the elastic modulus can be increased to 58GPa; second, developing nano-calcium carbonate modification technology to improve the performance of the fiber-matrix interfacial transition zone; third, introducing 3D printing molding technology to achieve precise control of the material's microstructure. These technologies have been applied in benchmark projects such as the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, verifying UHPC's performance potential in applications such as light-transmitting components.
As a vice president unit of the China GRC Association, Qinglong Group has always upheld the mission of "creating aesthetically beautiful architecture" and continues to push forward in breaking through the UHPC elastic modulus barrier. In the future, as materials science converges with intelligent construction technology, the 55GPa bottleneck will ultimately be broken. Qinglong will continue with its meticulous, excellence-driven attitude to provide designers and owners with higher-performance UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP material solutions, driving the architectural decoration industry toward lightweight, high-strength, and highly durable development.
