The refinement of a building's facade often depends on how details are connected. In UHPC facade systems, door and window openings serve as critical interfaces between the building and the outside world—their waterproofing, airtightness, and aesthetics directly affect overall building quality. As an industry leader with 28 years of dedication to UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has developed systematic door and window opening connection solutions through full-chain technology integration across hundreds of landmark projects. This article analyzes the key to connecting UHPC facades with door and window openings from three dimensions: design logic, process essentials, and engineering practice.
1. Design Logic of UHPC Facade Opening Connections: From Structural Safety to Architectural Aesthetics
UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete), with compressive strength exceeding 200MPa and excellent durability, has become an ideal choice for modern building envelopes. However, door and window openings, as stress concentration areas, require a triple design logic of "protection–cushioning–sealing." During the detailed design phase, Qinglong's technical team uses BIM models to simulate conditions such as thermal deformation and wind pressure loads, designing the opening frames as L-shaped integrated components that ensure rigid connection with the main structure while absorbing deformation stress through built-in elastic liners. In a provincial cultural center project, this design raised the crack control rate around openings to 98%, far exceeding the industry average.
In terms of aesthetic expression, the plasticity of UHPC offers more possibilities for opening shapes. Unlike the heaviness of traditional stone, Qinglong achieves precise control of opening lines through parametric design, with a minimum curvature radius of 300mm. Combined with fine surface treatment processes, mirror-level flatness or stone-like textures can be achieved. In a commercial complex project in Nanjing, UHPC integrated opening components were connected with a glass curtain wall, achieving joint precision within 0.5mm and becoming a finishing touch to the building facade.
2. Full-Chain Process Control: Millimeter-Level Precision from Production to Installation
As a national high-tech enterprise integrating detailed design, manufacturing, and construction installation, Qinglong has established a full-process quality control system covering "design–production–installation." At the Nanning production base, automated production lines enable standardized precasting of opening components, with pre-embedded stainless steel connectors ensuring installation precision and mold tolerances controlled within ±0.5mm. For projects in different climate zones, the UHPC mix design is adjusted accordingly—for example, in cold regions, steel fiber content is increased to 2% to improve frost resistance.
Innovative installation techniques are key to connection quality. Qinglong's original "3D scanning positioning + modular installation" method generates on-site measured data through laser scanning, compares it with BIM models, and makes fine adjustments to components, ensuring the gap between openings and door/window frames is uniformly controlled at 5–8mm. In a super high-rise project in Shenzhen, this technique improved installation efficiency by 40% while achieving IPX7-level waterproofing performance. Notably, the industry standard "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)," which Qinglong participated in formulating, has incorporated this installation technique into its specification guidelines.
3. Engineering Practice Insights: Solving Three Core Pain Points
Through practices in over 2,000 projects, Qinglong has identified three major technical challenges in opening connections along with their solutions: To address waterproofing leakage, a "multi-layer sealing + drainage slope" design is adopted, with pressure-relief cavities and water guide channels set on the inner side of components, combined with specialized elastic sealant, extending the waterproofing service life to more than 15 years. To mitigate the risk of thermal bridge condensation, UHPC composite insulation components have been developed through an integrated design of structural layer–insulation layer–decorative layer, achieving a thermal conductivity as low as 0.03W/(m·K). To tackle the machining challenges of irregular openings, five-axis machining centers deliver precise cutting of complex shapes; the double-curved opening components in an opera house project achieved a 1:1 reproduction of the design drawings through this technology.
From the UHPC curtain wall of the Guangzhou Opera House to the GRP daylighting roof of an airport in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong has always upheld its mission of "creating beautiful architecture," deeply integrating material properties with engineering needs. As a vice president unit of the China GRC Association and a member of the International GRC Association, Qinglong has participated in compiling multiple national and industry standards, providing designers with full-cycle technical support from concept to implementation backed by 28 years of professional expertise. Looking ahead, as UHPC materials become widely applied in the construction field, detail treatments such as door and window openings will become an important yardstick for measuring building quality—and systematic technical solutions combined with rich practical experience are precisely the key to Qinglong's core competitiveness in the new decorative building materials segment.
