The warmth of a building's skin lies hidden in every precise integration of material and craftsmanship.
In contemporary architectural design, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) has become an ideal choice for exterior wall decoration thanks to its ultra-high strength, excellent durability, and design freedom. How to scientifically combine UHPC exterior walls with insulation layers not only affects a building's energy-saving performance, but also directly impacts structural safety and aesthetic expression. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group draws on the practice of hundreds of benchmark projects to provide an in-depth analysis of mainstream integration methods and key construction points, offering professional solutions for designers and owners.
I. Mainstream Methods for Combining UHPC Exterior Walls with Insulation Layers
1. Integrated Prefabricated Composite Panel System: UHPC panels and insulation layers are prefabricated in the factory as composite components and installed on site via dry-hanging connectors. This method offers the advantages of high factory production precision and fast on-site construction, making it especially suitable for highly standardized commercial complexes and high-end residential projects. Qinglong Group's UHPC composite insulation panel production line has an annual capacity of 600,000 square meters, achieving a firm bond between insulation materials (such as rock wool and extruded polystyrene boards) and UHPC panels, meeting the requirements of the industry standard “Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Exterior Wall Panels”.
2. Cavity Structure Insulation System: This design forms an air layer between the UHPC cladding panels and the wall structure, with insulation wool or insulation boards built inside. This “breathing” structure not only buffers temperature transfer through the air layer, but also facilitates later maintenance and replacement of insulation materials. It is commonly seen in cultural buildings such as museums and art galleries that require dynamically adjustable insulation performance. In the Nanjing Road Century Plaza renovation project, Qinglong used BIM technology to optimize the cavity dimensions and insulation layer thickness, achieving a perfect fusion of light-transmitting UHPC components and the insulation system, and won the Silver Award of the First UHPC Construction Engineering Innovation Award.
3. Wet-Bonded Composite Insulation System: The insulation layer is bonded to the back of the UHPC panel with a special adhesive, and then additionally fixed to the base wall with anchor bolts. This technique is suitable for exterior walls with complex shapes, such as double-curved surfaces and openwork relief components, and can fully exploit the exceptional plasticity of UHPC materials. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong adopted this technique to achieve curved-surface bonding between GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) and the insulation layer, winning the GRC Construction Engineering Innovation Award.
II. Key Construction Points and Quality Control
1. Interface Treatment Technology: The smoothness of UHPC surfaces leading to insufficient bonding strength is a core construction challenge. Drawing on 28 years of technical accumulation, Qinglong has developed a special interface treatment agent that increases the bonding strength between the insulation layer and UHPC panels by more than 40%, far exceeding industry standards. Before construction, the UHPC surface must be treated by sandblasting or chemical etching to ensure the interface roughness reaches 0.5-1.5mm.
2. Thermal Stress Control: The difference in thermal expansion coefficients between UHPC and insulation materials can easily cause cracking. Qinglong uses 3D laser scanning technology for pre-assembly, reserving 2-5mm thermal joints filled with elastic sealing materials. In projects in severely cold regions, thermal-break connectors are used to block thermal bridges, reducing the heat transfer coefficient (K value) of the insulation system to as low as 0.15 W/(㎡·K).
3. Fire Safety and Durability Assurance: As a National High-Tech Enterprise, Qinglong's UHPC insulation composite panels have all passed GB8624-2012 Class A fire certification and demonstrated durability of over 50 years in accelerated aging tests. During construction, the “Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)” must be strictly implemented to ensure that anchor spacing does not exceed 600mm and single-point load capacity is ≥1.5kN.
III. Qinglong's Full-Chain Advantages Empowering Project Delivery
From parametric modeling (Rhino+Grasshopper) in the detailed design stage, to automated casting and forming in production, and then to BIM collaborative management for on-site installation, Qinglong relies on its national-level R&D center and provincial-level engineering technology center to provide one-stop “design-production-construction-maintenance” services for UHPC exterior wall insulation systems. It has provided customized solutions for renowned real estate groups such as Poly and China Overseas, as well as overseas projects (e.g., in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia), and has completed more than 10 million square meters of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP projects to date.
[Summary] The combination of UHPC exterior walls and insulation layers represents a deep fusion of materials science and engineering technology. Choosing an appropriate process solution requires comprehensive consideration of building function, regional climate, and aesthetic needs. Guided by its mission of “creating beautiful architecture”, Qinglong Group will continue to push the boundaries of new building material applications through technological innovation, providing the industry with systematic solutions that combine safety, energy efficiency, and artistic appeal.
