Millimeter-Level Precision Creates the Beauty of Architectural Art — The Core Secrets of UHPC Double-Curved Panel Mold Control
In the field of contemporary architectural decoration, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has become the material of choice for shaping complex building skins such as double-curved and irregular forms, thanks to its outstanding mechanical properties and design freedom. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group understands that mold precision is the core factor determining the quality of finished double-curved panels. Drawing on full-chain technical experience, this article systematically analyzes the precision standards and key control points of UHPC double-curved panel molds, providing designers and owners with a full-process technical reference from drawings to finished products.
1. Precision Benchmarks of UHPC Double-Curved Panel Molds: From Millimeter-Level Tolerances to Micron-Level Control
The three-dimensional curved surface characteristics of double-curved panels place stringent demands on molds. According to the industry standard 'General Technical Conditions for Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Non-Load-Bearing Components' (Plan No. 2024-0232T-JC), which Qinglong participated in drafting, the dimensional deviation of UHPC double-curved panel molds must be controlled within ±0.5mm/m, surface flatness error must not exceed 1mm/2m, and radius of curvature deviation must be ≤3‰. This precision standard far exceeds that of traditional concrete components—equivalent to a maximum allowable error of no more than 5mm on a 10-meter-long curved surface, a degree of rigor comparable to precision machining.
The underlying logic for achieving this precision lies in the properties of UHPC material—high strength (compressive strength ≥150MPa) and low shrinkage (drying shrinkage ≤0.08%) mean that even the slightest mold error is fully transferred to the finished product. Taking the translucent concrete project of the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation as an example, Qinglong used 3D scanning technology for full-size mold inspection, controlling cumulative error within 0.3mm and ultimately achieving seamless splicing of a 300㎡ double-curved translucent curtain wall. The project won the Silver Award of the first AALBORG WHITE Cup UHPC Architectural Engineering Innovation Award.
2. Four Key Technical Points of Mold Precision Control
1. Digital Design and Parametric Modeling: Precision Control from the Source
Leveraging the R&D strength of its provincial-level engineering technology center, Qinglong has established a full-process digital system from Rhino/Grasshopper parametric design to BIM model implementation. Addressing the double-curvature characteristics of double-curved panels, NURBS surface modeling technology is used to refine design tolerances to 0.1mm. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, real-time synchronization between the BIM model and mold machining data successfully resolved the coordinated production of 1,200 double-curved GRC/UHPC composite components. The project received the Silver Award of the GRC Architectural Engineering Innovation Award.
2. Mold Material Selection and Structural Optimization: Balancing Rigidity and Stability
The choice of mold material directly affects precision retention. For large double-curved projects, Qinglong adopts composite structures of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy and high-strength steel, optimizing support spacing through finite element analysis to ensure that mold deflection during pouring remains ≤0.2mm. Compared with traditional wooden molds, metal molds retain their precision for more than 50 reuses, providing a stable guarantee for mass production. In a landmark project in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong's custom aluminum alloy double-curved molds enabled the standardized production of 800 components with dimensional consistency reaching 99.8%.
3. Machining Processes and Inspection Systems: A Full-Process Quality Closed Loop
Five-axis machining centers are used for mold milling with machining precision up to ±0.05mm, combined with 3D laser scanning (point cloud accuracy 0.02mm) and blue light inspection technology to form a quality closed loop of “design–machining–inspection–correction.” The German Zeiss coordinate measuring machines equipped at Qinglong's production bases enable full-size mold inspection, ensuring that every mold meets design requirements. This rigorous inspection system has enabled Qinglong's UHPC products to pass strict local quality certifications in overseas projects in Malaysia, Australia, and other countries.
4. Demolding and Curing Processes: The Last Mile of Precision Retention
Addressing the early-strength characteristics of UHPC material, Qinglong developed a temperature gradient control curing technology that keeps the curing temperature difference within ±2℃ through built-in temperature control systems in the molds, preventing deformation caused by thermal stress. In a double-curved canopy project for a commercial complex in Guangzhou, custom release agents and step-by-step demolding processes successfully resolved stress concentration issues during the demolding of curved components, ensuring finished product dimensional deviation is controlled within 0.3mm.
As a national Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative enterprise and a participant in industry standard-setting, Qinglong Group has always practiced its mission of “creating beautiful architecture” with a meticulous and excellence-driven attitude. Its full-chain service capabilities, from detailed design to after-sales maintenance, have given Qinglong unique technical advantages in the field of UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials. In the future, as demand for artistic architecture grows, mold precision control will become a core indicator of a company's technical strength, and Qinglong will continue its pursuit of millimeter-level precision, contributing intelligent manufacturing solutions from China to the global architectural decoration industry.
