In the field of architectural decoration materials, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) has become the preferred material for high-end projects thanks to its outstanding mechanical properties and design freedom. However, drilling UHPC panels often presents cracking challenges for engineers and construction teams, which not only affects construction schedules but may also create hidden structural safety risks. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group will analyze this technical pain point in depth from three dimensions—material properties, process parameters, and solutions—providing expert-level guidance for designers and owners.
1. Underlying Causes of Drilling Cracks in UHPC Panels: Material Properties and Process Challenges
The ultra-high strength of UHPC (compressive strength up to 150-200MPa) and its dense microstructure give it mechanical responses during drilling that are entirely different from ordinary concrete. Through thousands of tests, Qinglong Group's laboratory has found that cracking mainly stems from three core contradictions: first, stress concentration at the interface between the steel fibers and the matrix within the material—high-speed rotating drill bits easily cut through the fibers, causing a sharp drop in local strength; second, the instantaneous temperature rise during drilling (which can exceed 80℃) generates thermal stress gradients, and when the temperature exceeds the glass transition temperature of the resin-based cementitious material, the material's brittleness increases significantly; third, the cutting method of traditional twist drills does not match the anisotropy of UHPC—especially in components thicker than 50mm, poor chip evacuation easily creates a "wedging effect".
2. Full-Process Solutions: From Material Optimization to Process Innovation
To address the above issues, Qinglong Group has built a trinity solution system of "prevention-control-repair" based on the technical expertise of its national-level R&D center. At the material level, crack resistance and toughness are improved by adjusting the steel fiber content (optimal range 1.5%-2.0%) and adopting hybrid basalt fiber reinforcement technology; at the design stage, BIM technology is used to simulate drilling positions to avoid stress concentration zones, and pre-embedded sleeve technology is adopted for holes with a diameter exceeding 30mm. During construction, an innovative "stepped drilling method" is applied: first a Φ5mm drill bit is used for pre-drilling and positioning, then a diamond-coated hollow drill is used for hole enlargement, combined with a water-soluble cooling lubricant to keep the temperature below 50℃. This process has been verified in projects such as the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, reducing the cracking rate to below 0.3%.
3. Industry Experience Insights: Establishing a Standardized System for UHPC Processing
As a participating drafter of the industry standard General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), Qinglong Group emphasizes the key role of standardized operations in solving cracking problems. Project teams are advised to re-test the mechanical properties of materials before processing and adjust drilling parameters based on the measured elastic modulus and ultimate tensile values; select special drill bits with carbide tips, control the rotation speed at 800-1200r/min, and maintain a constant feed rate (30-50mm/min recommended). In addition, for similar fiber-reinforced materials such as GRC and GRG, the UHPC processing logic can be used as a reference, but process parameters need to be adjusted according to material properties—for example, the feed rate for GRG should be reduced to 20mm/min to avoid micro-cracks in the gypsum matrix.
From the GRC curtain wall of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center to the GRP skylight roof of an airport in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong Group has always approached material processing challenges with an attitude of "meticulousness and constant pursuit of excellence". The drilling crack problem of UHPC panels is essentially a matter of matching material properties with processing technology. Through scientific material selection, precise parameter control, and advanced processing equipment, efficient and safe processing results can be fully achieved. In the future, as UHPC is widely applied in the field of architectural decoration, establishing complete processing standards will become an important cornerstone of high-quality industry development, and Qinglong Group will continue to play a leading technological role, providing global customers with full-chain solutions from detailed design to after-sales maintenance.
