When architectural aesthetics meets structural mechanics, UHPC openwork components carry artistic tension with their "lightweight skeleton," building a perfect balance between light transmission and load bearing.

In contemporary architectural design, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) has become the ideal material for realizing complex forms thanks to its ultra-high strength, excellent toughness, and outstanding durability. Among its applications, UHPC openwork components, with their unique interplay of light and shadow and artistic expressiveness, are widely used in the facades and decorative systems of landmark buildings and cultural venues. However, while openwork design lends buildings a dynamic aesthetic, it also poses severe challenges to structural safety. As an industry leader with 28 years of full-chain experience in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group has drawn on the practice of hundreds of complex projects to develop a systematic set of design methods and technical measures, ensuring that openwork sections meet visual and artistic requirements while safeguarding structural safety.

I. Structural Characteristics and Design Challenges of UHPC Openwork Components

UHPC material itself offers compressive strength above 200MPa and flexural strength above 10MPa, yet its openwork structure leads to problems such as stress concentration and cross-section weakening. The design stage must focus on resolving three major contradictions: first, the balance between openwork ratio and structural load-bearing capacity—excessive openwork may result in insufficient component stiffness; second, uneven stress distribution under complex openwork patterns, which can easily create hidden crack risks; third, the coordination between self-weight and installation convenience—large-span openwork components must balance lightweight design with stability. Through its BIM parametric design platform, Qinglong Group builds digital twin models of openwork structures and simulates in advance the stress contours under different load conditions, providing data support for design optimization.

II. Openwork Design Methods Based on Mechanical Optimization

1. Application of Topology Optimization Technology: Drawing on nature's growth logic of "achieving maximum strength with minimum material," topology optimization algorithms are used to generate openwork paths. For example, in the renovation of Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, the Qinglong team performed topological analysis on light-transmitting concrete components using the Grasshopper plugin, designing the openwork holes as honeycomb-shaped hexagonal structures, which reduced weight by 30% compared with traditional circular holes while increasing flexural strength by 15%.

2. Reinforced Load Path Design: To address the weak points in openwork areas, a "primary rib + secondary rib" grid system is adopted. Primary ribs are arranged along the main load-bearing directions, with cross-sectional dimensions determined by bending moment calculations; secondary ribs connect the primary ribs to form stable triangular structures that effectively transfer loads. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, the cross-shaped rib beam structure designed by Qinglong for GRC openwork curtain wall panels successfully withstood wind load impacts under typhoon conditions.

3. Edge Transition Treatment: Openwork edges use arc transitions rather than right-angle cuts to reduce the stress concentration factor. Verified by finite element analysis, fillet treatment with a radius of R5mm or greater can reduce edge stress by more than 40%, significantly improving the crack resistance of components.

III. Technical Safeguard Measures in Materials and Processes

1. Fiber Ratio Optimization: Steel fiber content is adjusted according to the openwork ratio, generally controlled at 2-3% by volume. For components with high openwork ratios (openwork ratio > 40%), a composite system of hooked-end steel fibers and ultra-fine silica fume is adopted to ensure uniform fiber dispersion in the cement matrix, forming a three-dimensional randomly oriented support structure.

2. Precasting Process Innovation: A vacuum pouring + steam curing process is adopted to ensure concrete density in openwork areas. Qinglong's self-developed UHPC-specific molds achieve precise forming of complex openwork shapes through removable core molds, keeping component dimensional deviations within ±2mm.

3. Connection Joint Reinforcement: The connection between openwork components and the main structure uses a combined "flexible support + rigid limit" joint, which allows slight deformation to release thermal stress while ensuring anchoring safety through stainless steel embedded parts and high-strength bolts. The adjustable joints innovatively applied by Qinglong in a municipal project in Nanning successfully resolved installation tolerance issues for large-sized openwork components.

IV. Full Life-Cycle Quality Control System

As a national high-tech enterprise, Qinglong has established full-process quality control standards covering everything from material R&D to after-sales maintenance. At the design stage, it partners with universities on research into the long-term performance of UHPC openwork structures; in production, RFID chip implantation technology enables quality traceability; during construction, 3D laser scanning is used to verify installation precision; and after completion, 5 years of periodic inspection services are provided. This integrated "design-production-construction-maintenance" service model has become an industry benchmark.

From the artistic curtain walls of commercial complexes to the light-transmitting skins of cultural venues, UHPC openwork components are reshaping the boundaries of architectural aesthetics with their "combining strength and flexibility" character. Driven by continuous technological innovation and supported by the full-chain service capabilities built over 28 years, Qinglong Group will provide designers with solutions that offer greater room for imagination, bringing more "lightweight yet sturdy" architectural visions to life. In the field of new architectural decorative materials, only by deeply integrating structural logic with aesthetic expression can the corporate mission of "creating beautiful architecture" truly be realized.
