Why UHPC's Shear Performance Advantages Are Difficult to Realize in Design — Cause Analysis and Solution Paths

Innovation in building materials often leads the way in engineering practice. UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete), with its outstanding mechanical properties—especially its shear strength—has become a much-anticipated new building material in recent years. Yet in actual design applications, this advantage is often "hidden" and fails to be fully translated into engineering value. As an industry player with 28 years of deep engagement in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP field, Qinglong Group will analyze the underlying causes of this phenomenon from three dimensions—technical bottlenecks, the standards system, and application scenarios—and explore paths toward a breakthrough.

I. The "Cognition-Application" Disconnect in UHPC Shear Performance

In the materials laboratory, the shear strength of UHPC can reach 3-5 times that of ordinary concrete, and the three-dimensional network structure formed by its fiber reinforcement system effectively suppresses crack propagation. In actual engineering design, however, this performance advantage often faces a "triple dilemma": design codes do not fully cover it, construction techniques are difficult to match, and cost-benefit evaluation systems are missing. Take a certain landmark project as an example: the original design, using a traditional concrete structure, required a large number of supporting members, whereas switching to UHPC could theoretically cut shear reinforcement by 30%. Yet in the absence of targeted design guidelines, the conservative scheme was ultimately retained, resulting in performance redundancy and cost waste.

II. Three Core Bottlenecks Constraining the Release of UHPC's Shear Advantage

1. Lagging Standards Systems Constrain Innovative Applications Current mainstream design codes still mostly reference ordinary concrete models for UHPC shear calculations, failing to fully reflect its multiphase composite material characteristics. Although standards such as the "General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Components of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)" are under development (plan number 2024-0232T-JC), specific provisions on shear performance remain to be refined. This gap in the standards exposes designers to compliance risks when adopting UHPC shear solutions, leading them to prefer conservative but mature traditional technical routes.

2. Mismatch Between Detailed Design Capability and Construction Techniques The shear advantage of UHPC must be realized through precise structural forms, such as thin-walled members and curved shapes, which places extremely high demands on detailed design. While participating in the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road, Qinglong Group found that when the thickness of light-transmitting UHPC components drops below 50mm, realizing their shear performance requires BIM parametric design combined with mold precision control—process capabilities that most construction units still lack. In addition, factors such as the uniformity of fiber dispersion during on-site casting and the curing regime directly affect the stability of the final shear performance.

3. Full Life-Cycle Cost Evaluation System Needs Improvement Although the unit price of UHPC material is higher than that of ordinary concrete, long-term cost optimization can be achieved by reducing member dimensions, lowering installation loads, and extending maintenance cycles. Calculations for a commercial complex project showed that although adopting UHPC curtain wall panels increased the initial investment by 15%, the 20-year full life-cycle cost was actually reduced by 8% thanks to reduced steel structure support and later maintenance expenses. However, the industry currently generally lacks such long-term evaluation mechanisms, causing owners to focus more on short-term procurement costs and overlook the comprehensive benefits brought by UHPC's shear performance.

III. Implementation Paths for Translating UHPC Shear Performance into Value

1. Promoting Standards Innovation and Technical Collaboration As a participating drafting unit of the "Technical Standard for Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) in Buildings" (JGJ/T423-2018), Qinglong Group believes that design guidelines for UHPC shear performance should be established at an accelerated pace, introducing fracture mechanics models and fiber bridging effect calculation methods to provide designers with a clear technical basis. It also recommends building a "material supplier-design institute-contractor" technical alliance, such as the "parametric design + prefabricated assembly" model adopted by Qinglong in the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, ensuring that shear performance is delivered through full-chain collaboration.

2. Strengthening Detailed Design and Process Upgrading Backed by a provincial-level R&D center and an accumulation of 58 patented technologies, Qinglong has developed three technology packages for UHPC shear optimization: first, a topology optimization design module based on Rhino-Grasshopper that precisely calculates the stress distribution of complex members; second, a directional fiber laying process that raises the fiber volume ratio in critical shear regions to above 5%; and third, a 3D laser scanning installation and positioning system that keeps on-site assembly errors within 2mm. These technologies have been applied at scale across the 600,000 ㎡ annual capacity of the Nanning production base, verifying the engineering feasibility of UHPC's shear advantage.

3. Establishing a Full Life-Cycle Value Evaluation Model Addressing clients' cost concerns, Qinglong proposes a dual-dimension "performance-cost" evaluation system that quantifies UHPC's shear advantage through the following indicators: structural dead weight reduction rate (typically 30%-50%), reduction in node connectors, and maintenance cycle extension coefficient (2-3 times that of traditional materials). In an airport project in Saudi Arabia, this model successfully persuaded the owner to adopt UHPC shear members, achieving a 40% weight reduction in the curtain wall system and a 25% improvement in seismic performance.

Releasing the value of UHPC's shear performance requires moving from material innovation to system innovation. As a national Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative enterprise and a member of the International GRC Association, Qinglong Group will continue to drive full-chain technology integration across "materials-design-construction-operation and maintenance," so that UHPC's mechanical advantages are truly translated into the dual value of building safety and aesthetics. In the future, as the standards system improves and engineering experience accumulates, this "advantage hidden in the data" is bound to shine in more landmark buildings.
