When architectural aesthetics meet materials technology, UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) is redefining the artistic boundaries of the building envelope with breakthrough color expressiveness. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, Qinglong Group has leveraged its full-chain technical advantages to accumulate extensive hands-on experience in achieving color gradient effects, providing designers with a complete solution from creative conception to project delivery.
Technical Feasibility and Industry Breakthroughs of UHPC Color Gradients
UHPC itself possesses exceptional material properties, and its ultra-high-density microstructure provides a stable carrier for color control. Through precise regulation of raw material ratios and special process treatments, Qinglong's technical team has achieved dual effects ranging from natural textures to artificial gradients. In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, the Qinglong team employed light-transmitting UHPC and gradient coloring technology, enabling the building envelope to display dynamic color shifts from dawn white to sunset gold under varying light conditions. The project won the Silver Award in the first AALBORG WHITE Cup UHPC Architectural Engineering Innovation Awards, validating the maturity of this technical approach.
An Analysis of Four Implementation Approaches for UHPC Gradient Effects
1. Layered Casting Coloring Process: By laying UHPC mixtures with different color pastes layer by layer in the mold according to design proportions, natural color gradients are formed using the material's self-weight and vibration technique. This process is particularly suitable for components thicker than 50mm. In the curved exterior wall panels of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong used this technology to achieve a linear gradient from light gray to dark gray, with color transition errors controlled within ±3%.
2. Surface Penetration Coloring Technology: Based on UHPC's high porosity, specialized penetrating colorants create a controllable color penetration depth on component surfaces. Combined with CNC spraying equipment, precise color gradients at depths of 0-3mm can be achieved. This process is widely applied in landscape benches, sculptures, and other small feature components, retaining UHPC's original texture while presenting rich color layers.
3. Composite Lamination Gradient System: UHPC thin panels of different colors are bonded together with special adhesives, using interlayer thickness variations to achieve visual gradient effects. In the sunshade louver design of a commercial complex, Qinglong adopted a 3-layer composite structure, adjusting the color concentration and light transmittance of each UHPC panel layer to give the facade a flowing color sensation that shifts with the light from different viewing angles.
4. Digital Printing Texture Technology: Combining 3D scanning with UV digital printing technology, high-precision gradient patterns are printed on UHPC surfaces. This technology breaks through the physical limitations of traditional coloring, enabling arbitrarily complex color gradient effects. It is particularly suitable for interior and exterior decoration scenarios such as GRG ceilings and GRP special-shaped components. Qinglong has currently achieved color resolution control as fine as 0.1mm.
Full-Chain Assurance: A Technical Support System from Design to Delivery
As a National High-Tech Enterprise and a participant in UHPC industry standard setting, Qinglong has established a full-process assurance mechanism covering "detailed design - material R&D - production control - construction and installation." During the design phase, BIM technology and parametric design software (Rhino+Grasshopper) are used for digital simulation of color gradient effects; in production, a fully automatic mixing system controls color paste ratio precision to ±0.5%; during construction and installation, 3D laser scanning positioning technology ensures that jointing errors of gradient components do not exceed 2mm. This full-chain capability has enabled Qinglong to accurately deliver complex gradient effects in international projects such as the Malaysia Twin Towers expansion and airport curtain wall projects in Saudi Arabia.
As architectural aesthetic demands continue to evolve, the color expressiveness of UHPC materials is becoming a key breakthrough point for design innovation. Qinglong Group will continue to leverage its 28 years of technical accumulation and full industry chain advantages, guided by the mission of "creating beautiful architecture," to provide global designers with UHPC color solutions from concept to realization, allowing more architectural works that combine technical breakthroughs with artistic value to become splendid sights on the city skyline.
