**How to Design UHPC Curtain Walls for Wind Load Resistance: Analysis of Key Technologies and Engineering Practices**

In modern architectural skin design, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is becoming the ideal choice for landmark building curtain walls thanks to its ultra-high strength, excellent durability and design freedom. However, as a building's “outer garment,” curtain walls must directly face the tests of extreme loads such as strong winds and earthquakes, and their wind load resistance design directly affects building safety and service life. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials field, Qinglong Group has built up full-chain technical expertise, forming wind load resistance solutions that span from material R&D to project implementation, providing expert-level technical support for designers and owners.

### I. Core Technical Logic of Wind Load Resistance Design for UHPC Curtain Walls

The essence of wind load resistance design is to achieve a combination of “rigidity and flexibility” in the curtain wall under wind loads through the synergy of material properties, structural optimization and joint innovation. The mechanical advantages of the UHPC material itself lay the foundation for wind load resistance design: its compressive strength can reach over 150MPa and its flexural strength exceeds 25MPa—3 to 5 times that of conventional concrete—while its density is only 2.4-2.5g/cm³, achieving the dual advantages of “lightweight and high strength.” In structural design, key attention must be given to the dynamic characteristics of wind loads—including gust impact, periodic vibration and negative pressure suction. Finite element simulation (such as ANSYS and ABAQUS) is used to analyze stress distribution at different heights and shape coefficients, ensuring that the strength reserve factor of panels and supporting systems is no less than 1.5 times the design value.

Joints are the “vital link” of wind load resistance design. The Qinglong team innovatively adopted a “flexible hinging + rigid anchoring” composite joint: mechanical interlocking between stainless steel embedded parts and UHPC panels, combined with elastic gaskets to absorb wind vibration energy, avoids the stress concentration caused by rigid connections while ensuring stability over long-term use. Taking a 300-meter super high-rise project as an example, its UHPC curtain wall panels measure up to 2.4m×1.8m; through optimized rib layout and reinforcement design, panel self-weight is controlled within 50kg/m², and wind load resistance reaches 1.8kPa—far exceeding the 1.5kPa required by codes.

### II. Wind Load Resistance Optimization Paths in Engineering Practice

Moving from laboratory data to actual project implementation requires customized design based on the project's regional climate and building form. In a commercial complex project on the South China coast, in response to a typhoon-prone environment, Qinglong adopted three key measures: first, applying “gradient reinforcement” technology by densifying steel fibers at panel edges and anchoring zones (volume fraction up to 2%) to enhance local crack resistance; second, introducing BIM technology for wind tunnel simulation, adjusting support spacing according to wind pressure values at different floors—shortened to 1.2m on the top floors and relaxed to 1.8m at the bottom—balancing material usage with structural safety; third, developing a dedicated wind load resistance testing platform to conduct fatigue tests on finished panels at 1.5 times the design wind pressure, ensuring no cracks appear after 200,000 cycles of loading.

For irregular curved curtain walls, wind load resistance design is even more challenging. In a cultural landmark project in Nanjing that Qinglong participated in, the double-curved UHPC curtain wall had a minimum radius of curvature of only 300mm. Through parametric modeling, the curved surface was decomposed into multiple triangular units, and a “spatial grid + point support” system was adopted with 3D adjustment devices at each support point, satisfying the requirements for shape precision while enhancing overall wind resistance stability through load distribution. In the project's wind load test, the curtain wall remained structurally intact under simulated wind pressure of a Force 12 typhoon, verifying the engineering reliability of UHPC materials in complex forms.

### III. Full-Chain Service Ensuring the Implementation of Wind Load Resistance Performance

As a national high-tech enterprise integrating detailed design, production and manufacturing, and construction and installation, Qinglong's wind load resistance solutions run through the entire project cycle. In the design stage, it provides “turnkey” services covering material selection, structural calculation and joint detail drawings—for example, for projects in cold regions, nano silica fume is recommended to improve UHPC frost resistance, ensuring stable wind load performance at -30℃. In production, automated material distribution and steam curing processes ensure that the strength dispersion coefficient of components is ≤5%. During construction, 3D laser scanning positioning technology keeps installation errors within ±2mm, preventing on-site installation stresses from weakening the curtain wall's wind load resistance.

From the auxiliary facilities of Canton Tower to the podium renovation of Malaysia's Twin Towers, Qinglong's 28 years of industry experience prove that the wind load resistance of UHPC curtain walls is not the accumulation of individual technologies, but the system integration of materials science, structural mechanics and engineering management. Going forward, as the mission of “Creating Aesthetic Architecture” advances, Qinglong will continue to explore the composite application of UHPC with GRC, GRG and other materials, creating building skin systems that combine safety and aesthetics for more landmark projects.
