Amid the wave of innovation in building materials, Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), with its outstanding mechanical properties and design freedom, is becoming a key force in shaping the architectural forms of the future. However, in the leap from laboratory results to large-scale application, UHPC still faces the dual challenges of technical breakthroughs and industrial implementation. As an industry pioneer with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC/GRC/GRG/GRP materials, Qinglong Group draws on its full-chain practical experience to conduct an in-depth analysis of current development bottlenecks and explore breakthrough paths, providing the industry with solutions that combine technical depth and practical value.
UHPC Technical Breakthrough: Multidimensional Challenges from Material Properties to Engineering Adaptation
The technical challenges of UHPC are first reflected in the performance balance of the material itself. Its high strength (compressive strength up to 150-200MPa) and high toughness depend on the precise proportioning of steel fibers and ultrafine powders, but uneven steel fiber dispersion can easily lead to stress concentration, while the high water absorption of admixtures such as silica fume increases construction difficulty. In the Nanjing East Road Century Plaza renovation project, the Qinglong team used its self-developed “gradient fiber distribution technology” to raise the flexural strength of light-transmitting UHPC components to over 35MPa, while achieving light transmittance control over a 20-meter span, confirming the technical feasibility of material optimization.
Engineering applications face even more complex challenges. Compared with traditional concrete, UHPC mix design requires precise control of the water-binder ratio (usually below 0.2), placing special demands on mixing equipment and pouring processes. In a landmark project, Qinglong adopted an “ultra-high-pressure spray forming process” to solve the compaction challenge of complex hyperbolic components, controlling surface flatness error within 2mm/m and meeting the industry-leading standard of the General Technical Conditions for Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Non-Load-Bearing Components (Plan No. 2024-0232T-JC).
Building the Industrial Ecosystem: Coordinated Breakthroughs in Cost Control and the Standards System
The cost bottleneck is a core factor restricting the large-scale application of UHPC. On the raw material side, steel fibers account for more than 40% of material costs, while the one-time investment in specialized molds is 3-5 times that of traditional concrete. Through “modular mold design” and “industrial waste recycling technology,” Qinglong's production base in Nanning, Guangxi has increased mold turnover to more than 50 uses and achieved a 20% recycled aggregate content, reducing unit costs by 18%. This “technology + management” cost-reduction model provides economic feasibility for the popularization of UHPC in public projects such as municipal works and metro systems.
The imperfect standards system further compounds the difficulty of market promotion. Although Qinglong participated as a major drafting unit in developing industry standards such as Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Exterior Wall Panels (T/CBMF171-2022/T/CCPA 30-2022), problems such as inconsistent testing methods and missing design specifications remain widespread. For example, the deviation in UHPC elastic modulus test results between different laboratories can reach 15%, directly affecting the accuracy of structural calculations. To address this, Qinglong, together with the Guangdong Fiber Composite Materials Industry Association, is promoting the establishment of a full-process standards system covering material performance, construction technology, and acceptance specifications.
Future Breakthrough Paths: Dual Drivers of Technological Innovation and Scenario Expansion
Material innovation will focus on functional compositing. The Qinglong R&D Center is exploring composite application technologies for UHPC with GRC/GRG. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, the combination of a UHPC frame and a GRG surface layer met structural load-bearing requirements while achieving delicate decorative textures. This “structure-decoration integration” solution improved construction efficiency by 40%. Meanwhile, the development of cutting-edge technologies such as self-healing UHPC and smart-sensing UHPC is expected to open up more application scenarios.
Diversified expansion of application scenarios is equally critical. Beyond traditional building curtain walls and bridge engineering, the potential of UHPC in fields such as urban furniture and marine engineering is gradually being released. UHPC breakwater components customized by Qinglong for a coastal project in Malaysia, through the addition of basalt fibers, reduced the chloride ion permeability coefficient to 1.2×10⁻¹²m/s and improved durability by more than 3 times, demonstrating the application value of UHPC in extreme environments.
As a national “specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative” enterprise and a participant in industry standard-setting, Qinglong Group has always taken “creating beautiful architecture” as its mission. Through the technical accumulation of 28 years of full-chain experience, it is driving the transformation of UHPC from “laboratory star” to “engineering mainstay.” Facing these challenges, only through the coordinated efforts of material innovation, joint standard development, and scenario expansion can the technical dividends of UHPC truly be released, injecting new momentum into the green and industrial transformation of the construction industry. In the future, as cost-control technologies mature and application scenarios deepen, UHPC is expected to form a complementary ecosystem with materials such as GRC, GRG, and GRP, jointly building an architectural future with greater resilience and aesthetic value.
