In severe cold regions, freeze-thaw cycles pose the harshest durability test for building exterior walls. With its nearly impermeable dense structure, UHPC inherently possesses outstanding freeze-thaw resistance potential. However, to ensure absolute reliability in extreme cold environments, systematic "freeze-proof design" is still required at three levels: material mix proportion, structural design, and construction control. Qinglong Group's project practice in severe cold regions such as Northeast China and Northern Europe shows that, through targeted optimization, UHPC exterior wall systems can achieve a frost resistance grade of F300 or above, meaning they can withstand more than 300 rapid freeze-thaw cycles without any loss of performance.
Materials are the foundation of frost resistance. For severe cold climates, we adjust the UHPC mix proportion: high-efficiency air-entraining agents are incorporated to introduce large numbers of uniform, closed, tiny air bubbles (pore size <200μm) into the paste. These bubbles act as "pressure buffer valves" in the concrete, providing space to accommodate the volume expansion of water as it freezes (approximately 9%), thereby eliminating internal expansion stress. Meanwhile, the water-binder ratio is further reduced (to below 0.18) and aggregate gradation is optimized to minimize the content of freezable water and the number of harmful pores. The specially treated UHPC for severe cold regions can achieve a water absorption rate below 2%, with mass loss and dynamic elastic modulus loss after 300 freeze-thaw cycles far below the national standard.
Structural design is key to cutting off moisture intrusion paths. Panel joints are designed based on the pressure-equalized cavity and rain screen principles, ensuring that even if the external sealant fails locally, the small amount of infiltrated water can be effectively blocked or smoothly drained, without accumulating in the cavity behind the panels or at the root of joints. All horizontal joints are set with a drainage slope of no less than 5%. Metal connectors are made of low-temperature-resistant stainless steel to avoid cold brittleness.
Construction control is the final safeguard. When constructing in low-temperature environments (daily average temperature below 5°C), thermal insulation measures must be taken for the joint sealing work during UHPC panel installation to ensure the sealant cures at ambient temperatures between 5-40°C. Joint sealing work should be avoided on rainy days in winter. Through these comprehensive measures from the inside out, UHPC exterior walls can easily cope with the freeze-thaw challenges of severe cold regions and achieve an exceptionally long service life.
