Thanks to the reinforcing effect of glass fibers, GRC materials have more than 10 times the impact resistance of ordinary concrete. This property makes them particularly suitable for public places with heavy foot traffic.
In the renovation project of the American International School of Guangzhou, the GRC curtain wall was designed with an impact strength of 20 kJ/m², a rating capable of withstanding impacts from debris hurled by typhoons. Five years after the project was completed, the curtain wall remains intact.
The impact resistance of GRC derives from the bridging effect of glass fibers. When the material is subjected to impact, the fibers effectively prevent cracks from propagating. By optimizing fiber length and distribution, Qinglong has improved impact resistance by more than 30%.
Tested in accordance with the ASTM C947 standard, the impact strength of Qinglong GRC products typically falls within the range of 15–25 kJ/m². This figure was verified in the Xinghewan project in Shanghai, where the GRC decorative moldings have remained undamaged despite withstanding several severe typhoons.
The perforated GRC panels at the Liyuan Hotel in Nanning withstood an accidental collision with construction equipment during installation, leaving only slight marks on the surface, fully demonstrating the impact resistance advantages of GRC materials.
The outstanding impact resistance of GRC materials makes them particularly suitable for schools, commercial centers, and other locations with high safety requirements. Properly designed and constructed GRC systems can provide reliable protective performance.
