The mixing time of UHPC is far longer than that of ordinary concrete, with the core goal of ensuring uniform fiber dispersion and mixture homogeneity. The standard mixing time is 8-12 minutes, which should be flexibly adjusted based on the mixing equipment, raw material characteristics, and fiber type. As a participating unit in industry standard development, Qinglong has established a "three-stage mixing" process and time control standard to ensure the mixing quality of every batch of UHPC.
Core requirements for mixing time: why 8-12 minutes? The biggest difference between UHPC and ordinary concrete lies in its low water-cement ratio (0.25-0.3) and high fiber content (2%-3%). Ordinary concrete requires only 3-5 minutes of mixing, which cannot meet UHPC's requirements: First, the low water-cement ratio makes the mixture viscous, requiring longer mixing to achieve uniform flowability; Second, steel fibers/alkali-resistant glass fibers must be evenly dispersed in the cement matrix to avoid clumping, otherwise the strength and durability of components will be reduced; Third, aggregates such as quartz sand and mineral admixtures must be fully coated with cement paste to reduce internal pores. Qinglong's test data shows that when the mixing time is less than 6 minutes, the fiber clumping rate reaches ≥5% and the flexural strength of components drops by 15%-20%; when the mixing time exceeds 15 minutes, the mixture temperature rises (above 35℃), accelerating initial setting and affecting casting flowability.
Three-stage mixing process and time allocation. Qinglong adopts a "dry mixing - wet mixing - fiber dispersion" three-stage mixing process with a scientific and rational time allocation: Stage one, dry mixing (2-3 minutes): low-alkali cement, quartz sand, and mineral admixtures are fed into the mixing equipment and dry-mixed until uniformly blended with no obvious color difference, laying the foundation for subsequent wet mixing; Stage two, wet mixing (3-4 minutes): water and polycarboxylate superplasticizer are added, and mixing continues until a uniform cement paste forms with a spread of 600-700mm, ensuring the paste can fully coat the aggregates; Stage three, fiber dispersion (3-5 minutes): steel fibers/alkali-resistant glass fibers are added slowly and mixed until the fibers are fully dispersed, with no clumping or exposure; the final mixture achieves a spread of ≥750mm with a uniform and viscous consistency. Throughout the process, adding water or admixtures midway should be avoided; if the spread is insufficient, a small amount of admixture may be added (≤0.5% of the cementitious material mass).
Key factors affecting mixing time. First, mixing equipment: twin-shaft forced mixers (rotation speed ≥800r/min) are highly efficient, with mixing time controllable within 8-10 minutes; single-shaft mixers are less efficient and require 10-12 minutes; Second, fiber type: steel fibers with an aspect ratio ≥60 require 4-5 minutes of mixing; alkali-resistant glass fibers with an aspect ratio ≤40 need only 3-4 minutes; Third, raw material temperature: when the raw material temperature exceeds 30℃, the mixture tends to heat up, requiring the mixing time to be shortened by 1-2 minutes; when the temperature is below 10℃, the mixing time needs to be extended by 1-2 minutes, or the water temperature appropriately raised (≤60℃). Qinglong's automated mixing equipment can monitor mixture temperature and flowability in real time and dynamically adjust the mixing time to ensure stable quality.
Inspection standards for mixing quality. After mixing is complete, two inspections are required: First, visual inspection—the mixture should be uniform and consistent, with no fiber clumping, aggregate segregation, or bleeding; Second, spread test—using the cement paste spread test method, the spread should be ≥750mm, with spread loss after 30 minutes ≤50mm. After each batch of UHPC is mixed, Qinglong conducts sampling inspection, and any non-conforming products are discarded to ensure that products leaving the factory meet quality standards.
The mixing time of UHPC is the "guarantee line of quality." Qinglong's three-stage mixing process and 8-12 minute time control standard not only ensure mixture uniformity and fiber dispersion, but also avoid problems caused by over-mixing. Following scientific mixing times and procedures is the foundation for achieving UHPC's excellent performance, and reflects Qinglong's strict requirements for every batch of products.
