Performance Requirements for GRC Materials Across Climate Zones: Adaptation Solutions for Cold, Coastal, and Hot-Humid Regions

Differences in climate zones (temperature, humidity, corrosive media, etc.) determine the performance adaptation direction of GRC materials. Freeze-thaw resistance in cold regions, salt spray resistance in coastal areas, and mold resistance in hot and humid regions all impose specific requirements on GRC. As a GRC manufacturer with operations across China and overseas, Qinglong has developed a climate-adapted product system to meet the performance needs of different regions.

The core requirement in cold regions (winter minimum temperature ≤ -10°C) is freeze-thaw resistance. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles cause internal moisture in GRC to freeze and expand, damaging the microstructure and leading to cracking and spalling. Qinglong's adaptation solutions include: optimizing aggregate gradation by using quartz sand with water absorption ≤ 2% to reduce internal free water; adding air-entraining agents to introduce tiny closed air bubbles (10-50 μm in diameter) to relieve frost-heave stress; and increasing compressive strength to above 50 MPa to enhance structural frost resistance. GRC landscape pavilion components custom-made by Qinglong for a municipal landscape project in Northeast China showed strength loss ≤ 8% after 50 freeze-thaw cycles, far outperforming the industry standard (≤ 15%), and have served stably in the long term under severe cold conditions of -25°C.

The core requirements in coastal regions are salt spray corrosion resistance and impermeability. Chloride ions in salt spray can erode alkali-resistant glass fibers and steel frames (if present), accelerating strength deterioration. Qinglong's solutions include: using low-alkali cementitious materials and alkali-resistant glass fibers with high zirconia content (≥ 16%) to improve alkali corrosion resistance; adding chloride ion penetration inhibitors to reduce the chloride ion diffusion coefficient to ≤ 3×10⁻¹² m²/s; and applying a fluorocarbon protective coating on the surface to form an isolation barrier. In the Singapore National Service Center international project, Qinglong's GRC components have withstood the tropical marine salt spray environment for 5 years without any traces of corrosion, with surface color and finish fully preserved.

The core requirements in hot and humid regions (average annual temperature ≥ 25°C, relative humidity ≥ 80%) are mold resistance, carbonation resistance, and shrinkage-cracking resistance. High temperature and humidity easily breed mold and accelerate cement carbonation, and may also cause GRC to shrink too rapidly at an early age. Qinglong adds inorganic antifungal agents to inhibit mold growth; optimizes cementitious material proportions by incorporating mineral admixtures such as fly ash to reduce the carbonation rate; and uses retarding superplasticizers to extend setting time and reduce early shrinkage. In the Hainan Changying Global 100 Fantasy Paradise project, Qinglong's GRC components in the hot and humid environment showed no mold or cracking on the surface, with carbonation depth not exceeding 3 mm over 5 years, meeting long-term service requirements.

The core requirements in arid regions are weathering resistance and UV aging resistance. Dry and windy environments easily cause surface weathering and sanding of GRC, while long-term UV exposure accelerates aging of the cement matrix and deterioration of fiber performance. Qinglong improves surface densification (using a polished finish process) to enhance weathering resistance; adds UV absorbers to delay the aging process; and selects highly weather-resistant mineral pigments to ensure long-term color stability. In a commercial project in Saudi Arabia, Qinglong's GRC exterior wall components have maintained good appearance and mechanical properties after long-term exposure to arid, wind-blown sand and UV radiation.

Qinglong's climate-adapted GRC products embody the technical philosophy of "adapting to local conditions" and have been successfully applied in projects across multiple climate zones worldwide. For designers and owners, choosing GRC products that meet the performance requirements of the local climate zone is key to ensuring long-term project stability. With 28 years of cross-regional project experience, Qinglong provides customized performance adaptation solutions for each project, enabling GRC materials to deliver optimal performance in different climatic environments.
