The casting method for UHPC must be selected based on component type, dimensions, shape, and construction scenario, as different casting methods each have their own advantages, disadvantages, and scope of application. Common casting methods include four types—mold casting, pumped casting, spray casting, and precast component casting—each with its own core process and operational key points. Based on 28 years of production and construction experience, Qinglong Group explains in detail the mainstream casting methods and their applicable scenarios to help you make precise selections for your project.
#Mold Casting: Suitable for Special-Shaped and Small Components
Mold casting is the most commonly used UHPC casting method, suitable for special-shaped components, small components, and artistic sculptural products. Process key points: first fabricate dedicated molds according to design requirements (usually steel or polyurethane molds), apply release agent inside the mold, then pour the evenly mixed UHPC mixture into the mold, and compact it with a vibrating table or internal vibrator to ensure there are no bubbles or voids. The UHPC sculptures over 3 meters that Qinglong created for the Shanghai Astronomy Museum public art project used mold casting, precisely reproducing the complex artistic forms; the advantages of this method are high forming precision and great freedom of shape, while the disadvantages are long production cycles and high mold costs, making it suitable for customized, small-batch production.
#Pumped Casting: Suitable for Large-Scale Projects and On-Site Construction
Pumped casting is suitable for large-scale projects, on-site construction, and long-distance casting, such as bridge engineering and the roofs and walls of large venues. Process key points: use a high-pressure concrete pump to deliver the UHPC mixture through conveying pipes to the casting location; control the pumping rate during casting (typically 1-2m³/h) to avoid pipe blockage, while using vibration equipment to ensure compaction. In municipal bridge supporting works, Qinglong completed large-area UHPC bridge deck paving using pumped casting, with significantly improved efficiency; the advantages of this method are high construction efficiency and suitability for large-area construction, while the disadvantage is its high requirement for mixture flowability, requiring mix proportion optimization.
#Spray Casting: Suitable for Curved and Thin-Layer Components
Spray casting is suitable for curved components, thin-layer components, and strengthening works, such as tunnel linings and curved building exterior walls. Process key points: use dedicated spraying equipment to mix the UHPC mixture with compressed air and spray it at high speed onto the work surface; the spraying thickness is typically 5-50mm, and the surface should be troweled smooth and compacted promptly after spraying. The advantages of this method are no need for molds and flexible construction, making it suitable for complex curved surfaces and narrow spaces; the disadvantage is a relatively high material loss rate (about 10%), requiring professional operators to control spraying uniformity.
#Precast Component Casting: Suitable for Standardized Mass Production
Precast component casting is the primary method for factory production, suitable for standardized, large-volume UHPC components such as exterior wall cladding panels, decorative lines, and landscape components. Process key points: use automated production lines to mass-produce standardized components through mold casting, vibration compaction, steam curing, and other processes. Qinglong's 600,000-square-meter production base mainly adopts precast component casting, achieving high production efficiency and stable product quality; the advantages of this method are controllable quality and high production efficiency, while the disadvantage is a relatively large mold investment, making it suitable for mass production.
The casting method for UHPC must be comprehensively selected based on project requirements, component types, and construction scenarios. Qinglong Group can provide customized casting solutions according to the characteristics of each customer project, ensuring construction efficiency and product quality. Choosing the right casting method, combined with a professional construction team, will fully leverage the performance advantages of UHPC and ensure the smooth implementation of the project.
