Although GRC and GRG both belong to the family of fiber-reinforced composite materials, their core properties differ significantly due to different substrates and fiber types, directly affecting application scenarios and end results. Drawing on 28 years of experience with both materials, Qinglong explains the core performance differences between them and provides a matching selection guide.
1. Core Differences in Substrate and Fiber Characteristics
Fundamental material differences determine the basis of performance. Substrate: GRC uses low-alkali cement as its substrate, offering high strength and high durability; GRG uses gypsum as its substrate, with a fine texture and excellent thermal insulation. Fiber type: GRC uses alkali-resistant glass fiber with high tensile strength, suited to harsh outdoor environments; GRG uses alkali-resistant glass fiber with good bonding to the gypsum substrate, suitable for fine interior decoration. Density: GRC has a density of approximately 1800kg/m³—lighter yet strong; GRG has a density of approximately 1900kg/m³—denser with higher surface flatness. Qinglong's measured data shows that GRC of the same thickness is 5%-8% lighter than GRG.
2. Comparison of Mechanical Properties and Durability
Performance differences determine the applicable environment and service life. Mechanical strength: GRC has flexural strength ≥15MPa and compressive strength ≥60MPa, suitable for load-bearing and outdoor components; GRG has flexural strength ≥8MPa and compressive strength ≥30MPa, only suitable for non-load-bearing interior components. Weather resistance: GRC resists UV rays and withstands wind and rain, with an outdoor service life of over 20 years; GRG has poor weather resistance, prone to deformation and powdering under humidity, and is only suitable for dry indoor environments. Fire performance: GRG achieves a Class A fire rating with superior combustion performance, suitable for crowded indoor spaces such as theaters and shopping malls; GRC has a B1 fire rating, meeting standard fire protection requirements.
3. Differences in Workability and Decorative Effects
Process characteristics affect formability and surface texture. Design freedom: GRC is highly malleable and can achieve complex shapes such as double curves, hollow patterns, and oversized dimensions, ideal for outdoor landmark buildings; GRG offers high molding precision with smooth, refined surfaces, achieving delicate relief work and curved forms, ideal for high-end interior decoration. Processing efficiency: GRC uses spraying or casting processes with shorter production cycles, suitable for mass production; GRG uses mold casting with longer molding cycles but requires no additional surface polishing. Decorative effects: GRC can imitate stone, wood, and many other textures, suitable for outdoor landscapes and facade decoration; GRG has a flat, clean white surface that can be painted directly, matching minimalist or high-end interior styles.
4. Application Scenario Guide by Performance Fit
Selecting materials precisely based on performance differences enhances project outcomes. GRC applications: outdoor curtain walls, landscape features, exterior walls of large convention centers, special-shaped components for theme parks, and more—Qinglong has widely applied GRC in projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center. GRG applications: interior ceilings, theater walls, five-star hotel lobbies, high-end office interiors, and more—interior projects such as the Huawei Songshan Lake Terminal project and the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One preferentially use GRG. Combined application recommendation: large complexes can adopt a combined solution of GRC exteriors + GRG interiors, balancing outdoor durability with interior decorative effects. Qinglong has successfully achieved coordinated application of both materials in multiple commercial complex projects.
