Surface texture in UHPC shapes is key to enhancing artistic expression, and molds are the core vehicle for achieving precise texture replication, requiring appropriate processes and materials selected according to texture type. Drawing on experience from UHPC projects such as the Panzhihua Third-Front Construction Museum in Sichuan, Qinglong explains the mold processes and practical key points for achieving textures.
1. Core Process Selection for Mold Texture Replication
Select appropriate processes based on texture complexity and effect requirements. Direct mold replication process: for natural textures (such as rock or wood) or existing solid textures, silicone or polyurethane soft molds are used to directly replicate the texture, achieving over 95% texture fidelity; Qinglong adopted this process in the Dongting Lake Museum faux-stone UHPC project. Hand-carving process: for artistic original textures (such as reliefs and carvings), professional carvers hand-carve the design on a mold substrate (such as foam or wood), which is then reproduced as a GRP mold; this is suitable for personalized textures—the European-style relief textures of the Nanning Fengjingwan project used this process. Digital carving process: complex regular textures (such as geometric patterns and parametric textures) are precisely carved on molds with CNC engraving machines, with accuracy up to ±0.1mm; the faux-wood texture of the Shanghai New World project was precisely replicated through this process.
2. Mold Material Selection and Its Suitability for Texture Presentation
Mold materials directly affect texture quality and durability. GRP molds: suitable for most UHPC textured shapes, with smooth surfaces that can precisely replicate fine textures; highly durable and reusable more than 50 times, making them the first choice for conventional textures. Silicone molds: suited to complex curved surfaces and fine textures (such as tiny reliefs and biomimetic veins), with good flexibility and easy demolding that avoids damaging the texture, but a shorter service life (about 20 uses). Wood/foam molds: mostly used as master molds for hand carving or digital carving; lower in cost, suitable for customized, small-batch texture production; after carving, surface hardening treatment is required to improve texture precision.
3. Key Steps in Mold Making and Texture Optimization
Meticulous operation ensures perfect texture presentation. Mold substrate treatment: the mold substrate must be sanded smooth, with surface roughness ≤0.8μm, to prevent substrate defects from affecting the texture effect. Texture forming and curing: molds are made by coating, pouring, and other methods to ensure the texture is completely filled without air bubbles; curing time is controlled at 24-48 hours, and Qinglong improves mold curing quality through constant temperature and humidity curing. Surface treatment and release agent application: after the mold is formed, texture details are sanded and refined, and a dedicated release agent is applied to ensure clear textures and smooth surfaces after UHPC components are formed; the release agent must be applied evenly to avoid localized omissions that cause sticking.
4. Quality Control and Maintenance of Texture Molds
Full-cycle management ensures consistency in texture replication. Quality inspection: after the mold is completed, 3D scanning is used to test texture precision, compared against the design model with error ≤±0.5mm to ensure compliance with requirements. Batch production control: the integrity of the mold texture is checked once for every 10 UHPC components produced to prevent texture distortion caused by mold wear. Mold maintenance: residual UHPC slurry on the mold surface should be promptly cleaned after use; during storage, avoid compression and direct sunlight, and apply protective agents regularly to extend mold service life. Qinglong has established dedicated maintenance records for texture molds to ensure stable texture effects upon repeated use.
