Artistic UHPC shapes pursue the ultimate expression of aesthetics, often accompanied by designs featuring complex curved surfaces, hollowed-out patterns, and oversized dimensions. Balancing aesthetic creativity with structural safety is the core technical challenge. Drawing on its experience from the Artistic UHPC project at Shanghai New World Century Plaza, Qinglong analyzes the balancing strategies and practical key points to achieve the unity of beauty and safety.
1. Early-Stage Coordination Between Aesthetic Design and Structural Requirements
Aesthetics and safety are considered simultaneously at the initial design stage, laying the foundation for balance. Requirement decomposition and integration: designers and structural engineers work collaboratively to define core aesthetic elements (such as texture, curvature, and hollowing rate) and structural safety indicators (such as flexural strength and wind load), establishing design constraints. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong set a hollowing rate cap (≤50%) in advance. Material performance matching: select suitable UHPC formulations based on the aesthetic design—high-strength formulations (flexural strength ≥25MPa) for artistic hollowed-out shapes, and highly plastic formulations for surface texture shapes—ensuring material performance supports the design creativity. Scheme simulation and verification: use BIM + finite element analysis software to simulate the stress state of aesthetic shapes under different loads, optimizing unreasonable designs in advance to avoid later modifications.
2. Balancing Techniques for Shape Detail Optimization
Through refined design, safety is ensured without sacrificing aesthetics. Curved surface and curvature optimization: artistic curved shapes maintain a minimum radius of curvature ≥300mm to avoid stress concentration caused by excessive bending; double-curved shapes adopt gradual curvature design, balancing fluidity and structural stability. Hollowed-out shape reinforcement: high hollowing rate shapes adopt grid-like or honeycomb load-bearing structures, with stiffening ribs added at the edges of hollow openings. In the Ouargla Hotel project in Algeria, Qinglong achieved a 50% hollowing rate with structural safety through this design. Dimension and segmentation control: oversized artistic shapes adopt modular segmented design, with each component weighing within 500kg for ease of production and installation while reducing overall load-bearing risk. The oversized UHPC components of the Shanghai New World project balanced aesthetics and safety through segmented design.
3. Structural Reinforcement and Material Innovation Applications
Structural design and material technologies are applied to enhance safety margins. Internal structure reinforcement: stainless steel frames or carbon fiber cloth are added inside UHPC components to enhance flexural strength without affecting the external aesthetic expression. Qinglong adopted a built-in steel frame design in its large-scale UHPC sculpture projects. Node and anchoring optimization: hidden anchors are used for the installation nodes of artistic shapes, improving connection strength without compromising aesthetics, with anchor point spacing ≤500mm to ensure uniform load distribution. Material formulation improvement: active admixtures such as nano calcium carbonate are incorporated into UHPC to improve material density and strength, or integrated colored UHPC formulations are adopted to prevent surface coating peeling from affecting aesthetics. Qinglong's colored UHPC formulation achieves a color fastness of Grade 8 or above, balancing beauty and durability.
4. Whole-Process Quality Control and Verification
Strict management and verification ensure the balance is effectively implemented. Production process control: digital molds and high-pressure spraying molding processes ensure the production precision and density of UHPC components, with strength testing conducted on every batch. Trial assembly and load testing: after production, artistic shapes undergo 1:1 trial assembly to verify jointing effects and structural stability; oversized components require load testing to ensure safety requirements are met. Long-term maintenance: weather-resistant coatings and hydrophobic agents are applied to surfaces to improve weathering resistance, with regular inspection and maintenance to promptly repair minor damage. Qinglong provides 5 years of free maintenance for artistic UHPC projects, ensuring the long-term stability of both aesthetic effects and structural safety.
