The waterproof coating on exterior wall GRC components is a key barrier against rainwater erosion. The recoating cycle must be determined comprehensively based on coating type, environmental conditions, and service condition; untimely recoating can easily lead to waterproofing failure, causing internal corrosion and damage to components. Drawing on maintenance experience from projects across multiple regions, Qinglong analyzes the recoating cycle of waterproof coatings and core practical points.
I. Base Recoating Cycles for Different Types of Waterproof Coatings
Coating type determines the base recoating cycle, with significant differences. Fluorocarbon coatings, thanks to their excellent weather resistance, have the longest recoating cycle of 8-10 years and are suitable for high-end outdoor GRC projects. Qinglong applied fluorocarbon coating in the Xiangshan Science and Technology Park project in Longhua, Shenzhen, which still maintains good waterproofing performance after 7 years. Polyurethane waterproof coatings have a recoating cycle of 5-7 years; they offer strong adhesion but slightly weaker UV resistance and must be paired with a UV-resistant topcoat. Acrylic waterproof coatings have a shorter recoating cycle of 3-5 years and lower cost, making them suitable for ordinary projects with limited budgets. Silane impregnation coatings, as penetrating protective materials, have a recoating cycle of 6-8 years and are suitable for enhancing the water impermeability of GRC components themselves.
II. Environmental Factors That Adjust the Recoating Cycle
The severity of the environment directly shortens the recoating cycle, requiring targeted adjustments. In areas with intense UV exposure (such as Hainan and Yunnan), UV rays accelerate coating aging, so the recoating cycle of all coating types must be shortened by 20%-30%: fluorocarbon coatings can be adjusted to 6-8 years and acrylic coatings to 2-3 years. In coastal areas with high salt mist, salt spray corrosion easily causes coatings to peel and flake off, so the recoating cycle should be shortened by 30%-40%, and salt-mist-resistant coatings must be selected. In industrially polluted areas, acidic and alkaline dust erodes coating surfaces, so the recoating cycle should be shortened to 50%-60% of the standard cycle, while daily cleaning frequency must be increased to reduce pollutant accumulation.
III. Key Assessment Indicators and Timing for Waterproof Coating Recoating
Determine the recoating timing through visual signs and test data to avoid delays. Visual assessment: if the discolored area on the coating surface exceeds 30%, the cumulative crack length exceeds 1m/㎡, or the peeling and flaking area exceeds 5%, recoating is required promptly. Performance testing: use a water splash test—if water penetrates instead of forming a continuous water film on the surface, or if the coating adhesion test value is below 0.5MPa, recoating should be initiated. Time reference: once 80% of the base recoating cycle is reached, inspection must be conducted every six months, and recoating should be carried out immediately when any of the above signs appear. In the Liyuan Hotel project in Nanning, Qinglong precisely seized the recoating timing through regular inspections to ensure continuous waterproofing performance.
IV. Practical Procedures and Quality Control for Waterproof Coating Recoating
Standardize the recoating process to ensure the waterproofing performance meets requirements. Preliminary treatment: thoroughly remove the old coating layer and surface contaminants, grind the surface smooth, repair cracks and damage on the GRC component surface, and apply a bonding agent after drying to enhance adhesion. Coating application: apply in three layers of "primer-intermediate coat-topcoat", with the thickness of each layer conforming to specifications; the dry film thickness of fluorocarbon coatings must be ≥0.8mm, and the application temperature should be controlled at 5-35°C, avoiding application on rainy days. Quality acceptance: after application, check surface flatness and continuity; the result is deemed acceptable if there are no missed spots or bubbles and no penetration in the water splash test. Curing period: cure naturally for more than 7 days and avoid touching and rainwater washing. Through standardized construction, Qinglong ensures that the service life of the waterproof coating after recoating meets design standards.
