What Methods Are Commonly Used for GRC Curtain Wall Waterproofing? An Analysis of Waterproofing Techniques and Practical Key Points

Waterproofing treatment of GRC curtain walls is key to protecting indoor building environments from rainwater erosion, requiring a systematic solution based on component jointing, node construction, and material properties. Waterproofing needs vary significantly across different parts, and the core lies in blocking rainwater penetration paths. Drawing on 28 years of integrated experience in waterproofing and GRC, Qinglong analyzes mainstream waterproofing methods and practical key points.

1. Sealant Joint Waterproofing: The Core Method for Joint Waterproofing

Sealant jointing is the core of GRC curtain wall joint waterproofing, requiring suitable materials and standardized construction. Neutral silicone weather-resistant sealant or polyurethane sealant should be preferred. Weather-resistant sealant is suitable for outdoor exposed joints, with excellent UV aging resistance and a service life of ≥15 years; polyurethane sealant offers good elasticity and is suitable for nodes with large deformation (expansion of ±20mm). During construction, joints must be cleared of debris and surfaces kept dry and clean. Double-sided adhesive tape is used to control sealant joint thickness (10-15mm), and the sealant should be flattened after application to ensure the joint is full and bubble-free. In the GRC curtain wall project at Sanya Festival Plaza, Qinglong achieved leak-free performance across 70,000 square meters of curtain wall using this method. Note that the width-to-thickness ratio of sealant joints should be controlled at 2:1-3:1 to prevent joint cracking and failure.

2. Drainage System Design: Active Drainage for Waterproofing Assurance

An active drainage system channels infiltrated rainwater out promptly through designed drainage channels and weep holes, preventing water accumulation and penetration—an important supplement to high-reliability waterproofing. Internal drainage channels are installed at GRC component joints, with channel width ≥20mm and slope ≥2% to ensure rapid rainwater flow toward the weep holes; weep holes should be ≥10mm in diameter, with no fewer than 2 per component, positioned away from visually focal areas. In the wavy roof project at Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong designed a concealed drainage system that ensures waterproofing effectiveness without affecting appearance. Drainage systems require regular cleaning to prevent debris blockage and water accumulation; especially in environments with heavy falling leaves and dust, inspection and clearing should be carried out quarterly to ensure smooth drainage.

3. Component Surface Waterproofing: The First Line of Basic Protection

Surface waterproofing of GRC components enhances material hydrophobicity and reduces rainwater absorption and penetration, serving as a basic waterproofing measure. Applying a special penetrating waterproofing agent to the surface forms a hydrophobic protective film with a contact angle ≥110°, penetrating 5-10mm into the component to improve overall waterproofing performance. For stone-like and colored GRC components, transparent waterproof coatings can be selected, preserving appearance and texture while providing waterproofing. In the Third Front Construction Museum project in Panzhihua, Sichuan, Qinglong applied a transparent waterproof coating, ensuring long-term waterproofing of the GRC stone-like surface without affecting its texture effect. Surface waterproofing treatment must be carried out after component curing is complete; surfaces must be dry and clean before application, with even coating and no missed spots. Re-inspect every 3-5 years and reapply when necessary.

4. Special Node Waterproofing: Focused Control at Critical Locations

GRC curtain wall nodes (such as corners, door and window openings, and connector locations) are weak points in waterproofing and require specialized waterproofing solutions. Corner areas use integrated components to reduce joints, with waterproof baffles added where necessary; at junctions between door and window openings and the GRC curtain wall, dual protection with flexible sealant plus metal edging is adopted, with edging strips firmly secured to prevent rainwater infiltration through gaps; at connector locations, after bolt tightening, sealant is applied for sealing, with waterproof cover plates installed externally. In the Dongzhu Shangdu Commercial City project in Guangzhou, Qinglong resolved the waterproofing challenge of multi-point suspended connectors through specialized node waterproofing. Node waterproofing should be simulated in advance using BIM technology to optimize structural design, with focused inspection during construction to ensure every waterproofing procedure is properly implemented, preventing overall waterproofing failure caused by node leakage.
