Due to complex shapes, varied curved surfaces, and highly unique components, double-curved GRC curtain walls are far more difficult to operate and maintain than conventional flat curtain walls, and are prone to problems such as inspection blind spots, difficult component replacement, and high safety risks. Accurately identifying these difficulties and developing targeted solutions is key to ensuring the long-term stable use of the curtain wall. Drawing on operation and maintenance experience from multiple double-curved projects, Qinglong analyzes the core difficulties and the paths to overcoming them.
I. Numerous Inspection Blind Spots, Difficult Hazard Detection
The curved surfaces of double-curved GRC curtain walls are continuous and mostly irregular in structure, making it difficult for traditional inspection equipment to achieve full coverage and prone to forming inspection blind spots. The gaps between the back of components and the main structure are irregular, and some areas cannot be accessed up close, making hidden hazards such as loose bolts and welded seam corrosion difficult to detect; surface curvature causes visual observation deviations, and defects such as surface cracks and deformation are easily obscured. During the operation and maintenance of the double-curved curtain wall of the Guangxi New Media Center, Qinglong found that conventional inspection could only cover 60% of the area, leaving many concealed areas as detection dead zones. Solution: adopt drone + 3D laser scanning technology. Drones equipped with HD cameras photograph concealed areas, 3D scanning generates models that are compared with the original design to identify deformation and displacement, and infrared thermal imaging detects internal defects, achieving comprehensive inspection with no blind spots.
II. Highly Customized Components, High Cost and Difficulty of Replacement
Double-curved GRC components are mostly individually customized; each component differs in shape and size, with no standardized spare parts. Replacement requires redesigning and producing molds, which is time-consuming and costly. Mold production takes 15-20 days, component production and curing takes 7-10 days, and the total replacement period for a single component exceeds 30 days, far longer than the replacement cycle for conventional components. Replacement also requires precisely matching the original surface curvature, with high installation precision requirements (surface fitting deviation ≤ ±3mm); otherwise, the overall appearance is affected. Qinglong's solution: establish project component archives, retaining the design drawings, mold data, and production parameters of each component, and prefabricate spare components for key areas in advance; adopt modular replacement technology and optimize connection joint design to improve replacement efficiency, shortening the replacement cycle for a single component to within 15 days.
III. High Work-at-Height Risks, Difficult Safety Management
Double-curved GRC curtain walls are mostly applied in high-rise areas of landmark buildings; operation and maintenance require work at height, and the curved shapes make work platform erection difficult, significantly increasing safety risks. Traditional scaffolding has poor adaptability and cannot fit curved profiles; gondola operations are greatly affected by wind and have low mobility in curved areas, easily colliding with components and causing secondary damage. Qinglong's solution: adopt customized curved work platforms with adjustable supports designed according to the curtain wall curvature to ensure the platform fits closely with the curtain wall; equip intelligent fall-prevention systems and wind speed monitoring equipment, and suspend operations when wind force exceeds level 6; operators must receive specialized training for double-curved curtain walls and be certified to work; meanwhile, cover component surfaces with protective films to avoid damage from tool collisions.
IV. Rapid Sealant Aging, Complex Waterproofing Maintenance
The joints of double-curved GRC curtain walls are mostly curved, causing uneven stress on the sealant, which easily ages and cracks, leading to leaks and making maintenance difficult. Sealant application on curved joints is highly difficult and prone to problems such as bubbles and weak adhesion; after long-term use, due to thermal deformation and structural settlement, the sealant ages 30% faster than on flat curtain walls. Leak locations are difficult to pinpoint; curved-surface drainage makes leak paths complex, making it hard to accurately find the source of seepage. Qinglong's solution: select highly weather-resistant silicone weatherproof sealant and use specialized curved caulking tools during application to ensure full and uniform sealant joints; conduct comprehensive sealant inspections regularly (every 2 years), using high-pressure water spray tests to identify leak points; optimize joint design and add water drainage channels to reduce the waterproofing pressure on the sealant and improve waterproofing reliability.
