Production lead time is a key factor in project schedule control. The difference in production lead time between UHPC components and traditional concrete components stems from differences in material properties, production processes, and curing requirements. Drawing on its large-scale production experience with both product types, Qinglong Group analyzes the differences across the entire process of design, production, curing, and installation, providing a reference for clients' project scheduling.
Design and mold lead time: UHPC requires longer lead times for customized molds, while traditional concrete uses standardized molds with shorter lead times. UHPC is mostly used for components with complex shapes, requiring customized high-precision molds (such as fiberglass molds and steel molds), with a design and fabrication lead time of 7-15 days; molds for complex double-curved surfaces or artistic shapes can take up to 20 days. Traditional concrete components are mostly standardized designs (such as beams, slabs, and columns); molds can be reused, and the design and preparation lead time is 3-7 days. In Qinglong Group's translucent concrete project at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai, the customized tree-bark-texture mold took 12 days; the steel mold for the traditional concrete floor slabs, however, could be directly reused, requiring only 4 days of mold preparation. That said, although UHPC molds have a longer initial lead time, for batch projects (such as the 12000㎡ exterior wall panels for the Yangshengtang Pharmaceutical Hangzhou Industrial Park), mold reuse can shorten the overall lead time.
Production and casting lead time: UHPC's automated production is highly efficient, while traditional concrete on-site casting offers more flexibility. UHPC uses factory prefabrication with automated mixing and precise batching; the production lead time per component (including casting) is 1-2 days, and in batch production the daily output can reach 800-1200㎡. Traditional concrete components can be factory-prefabricated or cast on-site; factory prefabrication takes 2-3 days per piece, while on-site casting is greatly affected by weather, with a single-batch casting lead time of 1-2 days, though it must wait for preceding processes to be completed. In batch production, Qinglong's UHPC production line achieves 30%-40% higher efficiency than traditional precast concrete components: for example, the 3000㎡ UHPC curtain wall panels for the Yirui Biotechnology Building in Shenzhen took only 25 days to produce, whereas traditional concrete exterior wall panels of the same area would require 35-40 days of factory prefabrication.
Curing lead time: UHPC steam curing greatly shortens the time, while traditional concrete has a long curing period. UHPC uses steam curing, reaching 70% of design strength within 24-48 hours and meeting the strength standard at 28 days, with a curing lead time of 3-7 days. Traditional concrete requires 28 days of natural curing to reach design strength, and even steam curing takes 7-10 days—a curing period 2-3 times that of UHPC. In the Shanghai Astronomy Museum sculpture project, Qinglong's UHPC sculpture could be transported and installed after 5 days of steam curing; a traditional concrete sculpture, by contrast, requires 28 days of natural curing—a difference of more than 5 times. In addition, UHPC requires no extra curing later on, while traditional concrete needs regular water spraying to retain moisture, resulting in higher curing costs.
Installation and total lead time: UHPC is lightweight and high-strength, allowing fast installation, with a significant advantage in total lead time. UHPC components weigh about 200-300kg/㎡, only 1/2 to 2/3 of traditional concrete, so small hoisting equipment can be used, achieving 50% higher installation efficiency than traditional concrete; moreover, UHPC components have high precision (≤±2mm) and require no additional leveling for jointing, shortening the installation lead time by 30%. Overall, the total lead time of UHPC components (design + production + curing + installation) is 30%-50% shorter than that of traditional concrete components: taking 1000㎡ of exterior wall components as an example, the total lead time for UHPC is about 45-60 days, compared with about 70-90 days for traditional concrete. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC project, Qinglong's UHPC decorative components had a total lead time 40% shorter than traditional concrete, ensuring the project opened on schedule.
The difference in production lead time between UHPC components and traditional concrete components is mainly seen in the mold, curing, and installation stages. With factory prefabrication, steam curing, and advantages in light weight and high precision, UHPC offers a shorter total lead time and is especially suitable for high-end projects with tight schedules. Through automated production lines and standardized processes, Qinglong Group further compresses the UHPC production lead time while ensuring consistent quality. Clients are advised to give priority to UHPC components for schedule-sensitive projects with complex shapes, and to consider traditional concrete components for standardized, budget-sensitive projects, making flexible decisions based on project needs.
