How long should UHPC be mixed? This is a key process parameter affecting UHPC performance—both insufficient and excessive mixing lead to performance degradation. As a group with 28 years of UHPC production and construction experience and a participant in drafting industry standards, Qinglong Group deeply understands the importance of mixing time—it directly relates to the mixing uniformity of raw materials, the dispersion of steel fibers, and the compactness of the concrete. Today, we will explain UHPC mixing time requirements in detail and, drawing on Qinglong's production practice, provide a precise operation guide.
#The Core Principle of UHPC Mixing: Uniform Dispersion Is Key The core goal of UHPC mixing is to achieve uniform mixing of raw materials and uniform dispersion of steel fibers, which is also the fundamental basis for determining mixing time. UHPC raw materials include cement, quartz sand, ultra-fine reactive powders, steel fibers, admixtures, and mixing water. The composition is complex and the proportions precise, requiring sufficient mixing time to break the inter-particle forces of the raw materials and achieve uniform mixing. Steel fibers in particular: if mixing is insufficient, clumping occurs and the fibers cannot provide reinforcement; if mixing is excessive, steel fibers may break and the cement paste may segregate, which also affects performance. Qinglong has verified through extensive testing that UHPC achieves optimal performance when steel fiber dispersion uniformity is ≥95% and paste-to-aggregate mixing uniformity is ≥98%, and this requires precise control of mixing time.
#Standard Mixing Time: Staged Control with a Total Duration of 3-5 Minutes The standard mixing time for UHPC is 3-5 minutes. The exact duration must be adjusted according to factors such as mixing equipment, raw material condition, and ambient temperature, and the mixing process must be controlled in stages. Stage 1 (dry material mixing): load cement, quartz sand, ultra-fine reactive powders, and other dry materials into the mixer and mix for 1-2 minutes to ensure the dry materials are evenly mixed with no obvious color difference. Stage 2 (fiber mixing): add steel fibers and mix for 2-3 minutes so that the steel fibers are uniformly dispersed in the dry materials with no clumping. Stage 3 (water addition mixing): add mixing water and admixtures and mix for 3-5 minutes to ensure the paste fully coats the aggregates and steel fibers, forming a uniform, viscous concrete mixture. Qinglong uses automated mixing equipment with pre-set staged mixing programs to precisely control the duration of each stage; when mixing manually, extend the time by 1-2 minutes to ensure uniform mixing.
#Key Factors Affecting Mixing Time: Flexible Adjustment to Ensure Performance In actual construction, UHPC mixing time must be flexibly adjusted according to the following factors to ensure stable performance: 1. Type of mixing equipment: forced-action mixers have high mixing efficiency and can use the standard duration (3-5 minutes); gravity mixers have lower efficiency and require an extension of 1-2 minutes; 2. Raw material condition: when aggregate moisture content is high, the mixing time after water addition should be appropriately shortened to prevent the mixture from becoming too thin; when steel fibers are long (e.g., 12mm), the fiber mixing time should be extended by 30 seconds to 1 minute; 3. Ambient temperature: below 10℃, chemical reactions slow down, so extend the mixing time by 1-2 minutes; above 30℃, to prevent initial setting of the mixture, shorten the mixing time by 30 seconds to 1 minute and speed up pouring; 4. Component complexity: when producing complex-shaped or openwork components, the mixture needs to be more uniform, so the mixing time can be extended by 30 seconds to 1 minute. Qinglong's technical team develops customized mixing plans based on project site conditions and assigns dedicated personnel to provide on-site guidance, ensuring appropriate mixing time.
#Judging and Controlling Mixing Quality: Visual Inspection Plus Professional Assurance Mixing quality can be judged through visual inspection: a qualified UHPC mixture should have uniform color, no obvious aggregate segregation, no steel fiber clumping, and moderate flowability (spread meeting design requirements). If the mixture has uneven color or fiber clumps, the mixing time is insufficient and should be extended by 30 seconds to 1 minute; if the mixture shows segregation or bleeding, mixing was excessive or the water-binder ratio is improper—stop mixing and make adjustments. Qinglong has established a mixing quality inspection system: every batch of mixture must undergo a spread test and visual inspection, and unqualified mixtures are strictly prohibited from use in construction to ensure project quality.
Although UHPC mixing time is short, it directly determines the performance of the material and is a critical detail in construction that cannot be overlooked. Drawing on 28 years of practical experience, Qinglong Group has developed a staged, flexibly adjustable mixing time control method, using automated equipment and professional testing to ensure the mixing quality of every batch of UHPC. For contractors, strictly following mixing time requirements, flexibly adjusting based on actual site conditions, and relying on the technical support of a professional manufacturer will ensure UHPC mixture quality and lay a solid foundation for subsequent construction and project performance.
