The fiberglass mesh is the "skeleton" of double-curved GRC panels, and its laying process directly determines the product's mechanical performance and service life. The bidirectional curvature of double-curved GRC panels means that fiberglass mesh laying cannot follow the conventional process used for flat GRC panels; it must meet special requirements such as conforming to curved surfaces, uniform load distribution, and freedom from wrinkles and hollow spots, making it a core step in ensuring the quality of double-curved GRC panels.
Double-curved GRC panels are widely used in high-end projects such as landmark buildings and commercial complexes, and their complex curved forms impose higher requirements on every production process. As a company that participated in drafting the "Technical Standard for Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) in Buildings", Qinglong has developed a standardized fiberglass mesh laying process system through double-curved GRC projects such as the Guangxi New Media Center and Hainan Poly Peninsula No. 1.
Perfect conformity between the fiberglass mesh and the double-curved surface is the primary requirement. Since double-curved GRC panels feature bidirectional curvature, the fiberglass mesh must adapt to surface changes in both directions simultaneously, avoiding wrinkles and suspension, to ensure full bonding between the mesh and the GRC slurry so it can perform its reinforcing function. Second, the number of layers and density must precisely match the load-bearing characteristics of the curved surface: stress concentration areas of double-curved GRC panels require additional mesh layers or high-mesh fiberglass mesh to enhance local strength. In addition, the overlap width of the fiberglass mesh must be strictly controlled: the overlap width on double-curved surfaces should be no less than 100mm, and overlaps must avoid stress concentration areas to ensure uniform load distribution.
In the preparation stage, the fiberglass mesh type, number of layers, and laying positions must be determined based on the surface parameters and stress analysis results of the double-curved GRC panels. When cutting the fiberglass mesh, a radial cutting method is used to accommodate the stretching demands of the double-curved surface, preventing poor conformity caused by improper cutting. During laying, a "layer-by-layer laying, point-by-point compaction" approach is adopted: after the first layer of fiberglass mesh is laid, special tools are used to compact it tightly against the mold surface, ensuring no hollow spots; once the base slurry has initially set, the second layer of fiberglass mesh is laid and compacted in the same way, ensuring the two mesh layers are evenly distributed across the thickness of the GRC panel. In the Wuhan Han Show Theater project, Qinglong used this process to ensure the double-curved GRC panels met flexural strength requirements. Finally, after laying is complete, the conformity and overlap quality of the fiberglass mesh must be inspected, and any problems corrected promptly.
The core of quality control is preventing exposed mesh, wrinkles, and non-standard overlaps. During construction, the thickness of the GRC slurry must be controlled to ensure the fiberglass mesh is fully embedded in the slurry, with the exposed area not exceeding 0.5% of the total area. For areas with large surface curvature, pre-stretching the fiberglass mesh can improve conformity and prevent wrinkles. If insufficient overlap width occurs, additional mesh must be laid promptly to ensure overlap quality. In addition, alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh should be selected to prevent mesh corrosion and failure during long-term use, safeguarding the long-term durability of double-curved GRC panels. Through strict quality control, Qinglong keeps the strength degradation of double-curved GRC panels within 10% over 20 years.
The fiberglass mesh laying process for double-curved GRC panels represents a deep integration of technology and experience. With 28 years of manufacturing experience, Qinglong has translated these special requirements into a standardized construction process, ensuring that every double-curved GRC panel delivers excellent mechanical performance and structural stability. As a national Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative enterprise, Qinglong consistently takes process innovation as its core, continuously optimizing the production technology of double-curved GRC panels to provide high-quality products and services for the architectural decoration industry.
