Precise forming of free-form curved GRC panels is the ultimate test of mold technology. Traditional wooden molds are widely used in the production of conventional building components, but when faced with the complex shapes and high-precision requirements of free-form curved GRC panels, they struggle to meet production needs and are gradually being replaced by new mold technologies. Behind this shift lie multiple considerations: material properties, design requirements, and production efficiency.
With their unique artistic expressiveness, free-form curved GRC panels have become a popular choice for modern architectural decoration. The irregular curvature variations and complex texture effects on their surfaces place stringent demands on mold formability, precision, and durability. As an enterprise with a GRC production capacity of 600,000 square meters, Qinglong has gained a deep understanding of the limitations of traditional wooden molds through long-term practice, and was the first to adopt new mold technologies to ensure the production quality of free-form curved GRC panels.
Insufficient forming capability is the primary weakness of traditional wooden molds. The rigidity of wood makes it difficult to bend into complex free-form curved surfaces. Even when shaped through joining processes, problems such as visible seams and insufficient surface smoothness easily occur, making it impossible to reproduce the precise shapes shown in design drawings. Second, precision control is difficult: wood is prone to deformation and cracking under the influence of temperature and humidity, causing dimensional deviations in the mold and further affecting the forming precision of GRC panels. In addition, traditional wooden molds have a low turnover rate—they must be made separately for different curved shapes and cannot be reused, which increases production costs and lead times. In the Panzhihua Third Front Construction Cultural Tourism Project in Sichuan, the complex free-form curved GRC panels completely abandoned traditional wooden molds.
Free-form curved GRC panels require molds with exceptional forming flexibility, capable of accurately replicating the complex curved surfaces and texture details in design drawings, with surface errors controlled within ±2mm. Meanwhile, molds must offer good stability and durability, withstanding the pressure of GRC slurry and repeated use to ensure consistency in batch production. In addition, molds must allow easy demolding and have smooth surfaces to avoid damaging the GRC panel surface and reduce later repair work. Traditional wooden molds can hardly meet all of these requirements.
Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) molds and polyurethane molds have become the mainstream choices for free-form curved GRC panels. FRP molds feature high strength and high toughness, with precise forming and strong durability; their turnover rate can exceed 50 uses, making them suitable for mass production of complex curved GRC panels. Polyurethane molds, with their good flexibility and replication precision, can perfectly reproduce curved surface textures; they are lightweight and easy to demold, making them especially suitable for single-piece or small-batch products with highly irregular shapes. In the Qingpu R&D and Production Project in Shanghai, Qinglong used FRP molds to produce free-form curved GRC panels, ensuring shape precision while improving production efficiency. In addition, combining 3D printing technology to create mold master models has further improved the replication precision of free-form curved surfaces, providing technical support for ultimate creativity.
The abandonment of traditional wooden molds for free-form curved GRC panels is the inevitable result of technological upgrading in the architectural decoration industry. As a leading GRC manufacturer, Qinglong has always kept pace with technological trends, adopting new mold technologies to solve the challenges of free-form surface forming. Backed by 28 years of technical expertise and production experience, Qinglong can provide customers with full-process solutions from mold design and production to GRC panel forming, bringing free-form curved creative concepts to perfect realization.
