Rust seepage is a common defect in GRC exterior walls. It not only affects aesthetics but may also conceal structural safety hazards. As a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, Qinglong Group has handled thousands of maintenance projects for various GRC exterior walls. Drawing on its extensive after-sales experience, it analyzes the causes of rust seepage and scientific treatment solutions for designers and owners.
Rust seepage in exterior wall GRC mainly stems from the corrosion of internal metal components. Rainwater penetration carries rust to the surface, forming yellowish-brown stains. If not treated promptly, corrosion will continue to worsen, potentially leading to reduced component strength and anchoring failure. Qinglong's data shows that properly treated GRC exterior walls can effectively slow metal corrosion and extend service life by more than 10 years—a technology fully validated in the auditorium renovation project of the American International School of Guangzhou.
Inadequate anti-corrosion treatment of metal embedded parts. During GRC component production, if internal embedded parts and steel mesh are not adequately protected against corrosion, or if the anti-corrosion coating is damaged, electrochemical corrosion is likely to occur once exposed to air. Qinglong applies a dual treatment of hot-dip galvanizing plus anti-corrosion coating in production, ensuring metal components have an anti-corrosion service life of ≥20 years and reducing corrosion risk at the source.
Rainwater penetration introducing corrosive media. Poorly sealed joints between GRC components and damaged surface protective layers allow rainwater to seep inside, forming a corrosive environment upon contact with metal components. In rainy regions such as Hainan, improper drainage design can leave rainwater lingering on component surfaces, accelerating rust seepage. This issue appeared in the early stage of the Sanya Festival Plaza project and was later resolved through Qinglong's optimized treatment.
Improper material mix or construction techniques. If impurity metal particles are mixed into the GRC matrix, or temporary fasteners without anti-corrosion treatment are used during construction, localized rust seepage may also occur. Qinglong strictly controls raw material quality in production and promptly removes temporary components after construction to avoid leaving corrosion hazards behind.
Surface rust removal using eco-friendly treatment agents. For seeped rust, neutral rust removers are selected to prevent strong acids or alkalis from corroding the GRC matrix. The "spraying-soaking-scrubbing-rinsing" process thoroughly removes surface rust stains, followed by drying to ensure a clean, even surface. In the Nanning Liyuan Hotel project, this method efficiently removed rust from colored GRC components without affecting the decorative effect.
Blocking internal corrosion sources is the core step. For components with internal metal corrosion, partial disassembly is required for inspection, corroded metal parts must be replaced, and anti-corrosion treatment reapplied. If the corrosion area is extensive, Qinglong's specialized repair materials are used for reinforcement to restore component strength. After treatment, components are waterproofed and sealed to prevent rainwater from seeping in again.
Building a long-term protection system to prevent recurrence. A specialized protective coating is applied to the treated GRC surface to enhance hydrophobicity and stain resistance; joints are resealed with highly weather-resistant sealing materials; and a regular inspection system is established, with a comprehensive annual inspection to promptly address minor damage, fundamentally preventing rust seepage from recurring.
Treating rust seepage in exterior wall GRC must follow the principle of "first identify the cause, then treat the symptoms, and finally address the root problem"—quickly removing surface stains while, more importantly, blocking internal corrosion sources. With 28 years of full-chain service experience, Qinglong Group has developed a closed-loop solution covering inspection, treatment, and maintenance, providing long-term aesthetic and safety assurance for GRC exterior walls. Choosing a supplier with after-sales maintenance capabilities and hands-on experience is key to timely and effective treatment of GRC exterior wall defects and extended service life.
