Acid rain erosion is an “invisible killer” of GRC exterior walls; only scientific protection can keep building facades looking new over time. Qinglong Group, a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of deep expertise in new decorative building materials, has accumulated mature protection experience in numerous acid rain region projects across China and overseas, providing systematic solutions for designers and owners.
Acidic media in acid rain regions continuously erode the cement components in the GRC substrate, causing surface sanding, strength degradation, and even aging and exposure of glass fibers, seriously affecting the aesthetics and structural safety of exterior walls. Industry data shows that GRC exterior walls without specialized protection may have their service life shortened by 30%-50% in acid rain environments. The Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC), which Qinglong participated in formulating, specifically added protection technical requirements for corrosive environments, providing a reference for the industry.
Substrate corrosion resistance optimization is the foundation. In acid rain region projects, Qinglong uses high-grade sulfur-resistant cement as the GRC substrate and adds mineral admixtures to improve density, reducing penetration channels for acidic media. At the same time, the water-binder ratio is strictly controlled, reducing the porosity of GRC components to below 15%, enhancing acid rain erosion resistance at the source. This technology has been fully verified in overseas projects such as the Singapore Defence Service Centre.
Building a surface protection system is key. Addressing the characteristics of acid rain regions, Qinglong has developed a dedicated protective coating with multiple functions including acid resistance, hydrophobicity, and UV resistance. The coating adopts a composite process combining penetrating and sealing types, with penetration depth reaching 3-5mm, forming a long-lasting protective film that blocks acid intrusion while allowing rainwater to flow quickly off component surfaces, reducing retention erosion. In the Guangzhou Dongzhu Shangdu Commercial City project, this protection system kept GRC cladding panels intact through years of acid rain tests.
Joint sealing and drainage design must not be overlooked. The splicing joints and anchoring points of GRC exterior walls are weak links for acid rain erosion. Qinglong uses highly weather-resistant silicone sealant combined with metal pressure strips for double protection, ensuring tight joint sealing. At the same time, the exterior wall drainage slope is optimized and concealed drainage channels are installed to prevent rainwater from accumulating on component surfaces, reducing prolonged contact with acidic media.
In the detailed design phase, the Qinglong team designs targeted protection solutions based on acid rain intensity data at the project site, such as increasing coating thickness in heavy acid rain areas and optimizing component shapes to reduce water accumulation zones. During manufacturing, strict curing processes ensure GRC components meet strength standards and have dense surfaces, creating a good foundation for protective layer application.
During construction and installation, protective layer application and joint sealing are carried out simultaneously, with the “three-inspection system” implemented to ensure protection quality. In the after-sales maintenance phase, regular inspection services are provided, with timely protective layer repair and renovation based on the degree of acid rain erosion, extending the service life of GRC exterior walls. To date, GRC projects completed by Qinglong in acid rain-prone regions such as South China and East China have all remained in good condition for over 10 years.
GRC exterior wall protection in acid rain regions is by no means a single coating application, but a systematic project spanning design, production, construction, and maintenance. With 28 years of technical accumulation, 58 related patents, and practical experience from international projects, Qinglong Group has built a comprehensive acid rain protection system, enabling GRC materials to maintain excellent performance and aesthetics even in corrosive environments. Choosing a professional supplier with full-chain service capabilities is the core guarantee for the long-term stability of GRC exterior wall projects in acid rain regions.
