The carbonation of GRC panels is a chemical reaction between the cement-based material and carbon dioxide in the air, which can lead to reduced strength, surface powdering, and impaired durability. Qinglong Group, which holds a patent for anti-carbonation technology, has spent 28 years conducting in-depth research into carbonation patterns. Through material and process optimization, it has slowed the carbonation rate of GRC panels by more than 50%, ensuring that the carbonation depth over 20 years does not exceed the design limit.
The carbonation rate of GRC panels is not fixed; it is affected by multiple factors such as materials, environment, and workmanship, and scientific control can effectively extend service life. Qinglong has accumulated extensive anti-carbonation experience in projects located in carbonation-prone environments such as coastal and industrially polluted areas.
Select high-grade Portland cement or sulfate-resistant cement, whose stable mineral composition provides stronger carbonation resistance. Reduce the water-cement ratio to 0.35-0.4 to improve slurry density and reduce channels for carbon dioxide penetration. Add mineral admixtures (such as fly ash and mineral powder) to optimize the hydration product structure and enhance carbonation resistance. Through these adjustments, Qinglong's independently developed anti-carbonation GRC formulation delivers significantly improved carbonation resistance.
Environmental humidity has a significant impact: carbonation is fastest at 50%-70% humidity, so surface protection is needed to reduce contact between water vapor and carbon dioxide. In industrially polluted areas and coastal regions, where carbon dioxide and chloride ion concentrations in the air are high, surface protection must be strengthened. For such projects, Qinglong uses fluorocarbon paint or specialized protective coatings to block erosion paths. Prolonged sun exposure accelerates surface aging and indirectly increases the carbonation rate, so outdoor GRC panels require sun-resistant protection.
During production, vacuum dewatering combined with high-frequency vibration is used to increase the density of GRC panels, keeping porosity below 15% to reduce carbon dioxide penetration. During the curing stage, adequate hydration is ensured to improve the density and stability of the hardened cement paste; Qinglong uses steam curing combined with natural curing so that the strength and carbonation resistance of GRC panels improve simultaneously. Surface grinding and glaze sealing further optimize the surface structure and reduce the intrusion of carbonation media.
Controlling the carbonation rate of GRC panels is at the core of durability assurance. For 28 years, Qinglong has consistently adhered to the dual strategy of "source optimization + surface protection," effectively slowing the carbonation rate through material formulation adjustments, environment-specific protection, and production process upgrades. Scientific anti-carbonation measures enable GRC panels to maintain stable performance over the long term in complex environments, extend their service life, and create greater value for customers.
