Grinding is a key process for enhancing the "appearance" of GRC decorative panels; refined craftsmanship can eliminate surface defects and improve flatness and texture. Qinglong Group, which undertook the high-precision GRC panel project for the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, has developed a standardized grinding process over 28 years, achieving "mirror-grade" flatness on GRC panel surfaces and showcasing high-end decorative effects.
Grinding GRC decorative panels is not simply about "smoothing them out"; it requires phased, tool-selected refined operations based on surface conditions and decorative requirements. Over-grinding can easily damage the glass fibers, while insufficient grinding fails to eliminate defects. Through process optimization, Qinglong controls the surface flatness error of ground GRC panels within ±2mm/2m.
The first grinding should be performed 24-48 hours after GRC panels are demolded, when the panels reach 70% of their design strength—strong enough to grind off surface laitance and burrs, yet without risking damage due to insufficient strength. The second fine grinding should be carried out after curing is complete, ensuring the panels fully meet strength requirements and avoiding cracks during fine grinding. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong strictly controlled the grinding timing to ensure both grinding quality and panel safety.
Use flexible grinding tools and avoid hard grinding wheels to prevent scratching the surface. Grinding is carried out in three stages: coarse grinding uses 80-120 grit wheels to remove obvious defects such as honeycombing and pitted surfaces; medium grinding uses 180-240 grit wheels to improve flatness; fine grinding uses 320-400 grit wheels to optimize surface texture. In the colored GRC panel project for the Nanning Liyuan Hotel, Qinglong's three-stage grinding produced smooth, refined surfaces with uniform color and no grinding marks.
Control the grinding force and apply pressure evenly to avoid localized over-grinding that exposes glass fibers. Dust generated during grinding must be cleaned up promptly to prevent it from adhering to the surface and affecting subsequent coating or decorative effects. For specially shaped GRC panels such as stone-imitation and carved designs, manual fine grinding is required to protect the modeling details. In the stone-imitation GRC panel project for the Dongting Lake Museum, Qinglong hand-ground the carved areas to ensure clear textures and flat surfaces.
The grinding process for GRC decorative panels reflects quality in the details. For 28 years, Qinglong has consistently adhered to the principles of "precise timing, suitable tools, and graded grinding," creating high-quality surface effects through standardized processes and refined operations. Fine grinding craftsmanship maximizes the decorative value of GRC decorative panels, adding refined texture and artistic ambience to buildings.
