Joint spacing in GRC decorative panel installation is "safety hidden in the details." The width design must balance thermal expansion and contraction, settlement deformation, and waterproofing requirements. As the group that undertook the 120,000-square-meter GRC roof project for the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong Group has developed a scientific joint spacing design system over 28 years, preventing cracking and leaking caused by improper joint spacing.
Joint spacing is an essential step in GRC decorative panel installation. Its width is not set arbitrarily but must be precisely calculated based on panel dimensions, installation environment, and structure type. In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, Qinglong used scientific joint spacing design to effectively cope with temperature changes and structural settlement, with no cracking or leaking after installation.
For standard flat GRC decorative panels, when a single panel measures ≤1.2 m, the joint width is 5-8 mm; for panels measuring 1.2-2.0 m, the joint width is 8-12 mm to accommodate thermal deformation. Curved and specially shaped GRC panels, with their complex geometry, require joint widths increased by 2-3 mm to avoid stress concentration at the joints. In the hyperbolic GRC panel project for the Guangxi New Media Center, Qinglong set the joint width at 10 mm, perfectly matching the deformation characteristics of the hyperbolic surfaces.
Temperature deformation is the primary consideration. The linear expansion coefficient of GRC material is approximately 10×10⁻⁶/°C, so the joint width must accommodate the deformation under maximum temperature variation to prevent panels from cracking under compression. Structural settlement deformation requires reserved redundancy: for high-rise buildings and soft-soil foundation projects, the joint width should be increased by 3-5 mm. In the Nanning Jinyuelanwan project, Qinglong set the joint width at 12 mm in consideration of soft-soil foundation settlement. Waterproofing requirements must not be overlooked: joints must be filled with waterproof sealant, and the width must match the sealant's effective bonding width to ensure waterproofing performance.
Joint Sealing Treatment: Supporting Processes Ensure Performance
Joints require neutral weather-resistant sealant that is UV-resistant and aging-resistant, with good compatibility with GRC panels to avoid corroding them. Sealant filling must be full and level, free of bubbles and gaps. In the Sanya Festival Plaza project, Qinglong adopted a four-step process of "cleaning - priming - filling - smoothing" to ensure the sealant fits the joint perfectly, delivering long-lasting waterproofing. For outdoor projects, a water stop strip can be installed on the outer side of the joint to further enhance waterproofing performance.
Joint spacing design in GRC decorative panel installation is a key detail in balancing deformation and waterproofing. For 28 years, Qinglong has always based its work on scientific calculations, setting joint widths according to actual project scenarios and combining them with standardized sealing processes to ensure long-term stability after installation. Scientific joint spacing design both releases deformation stress and provides effective waterproofing, safeguarding the long-term service of GRC decorative panels.
