Honeycombing and pitted surfaces are common quality defects on GRC component surfaces, appearing as holes and pits. They not only affect the building's appearance but may also reduce the component's water resistance and durability. Qinglong Group, with 28 years of GRC production experience, has identified the core causes of honeycombing and pitting through the analysis of thousands of projects and developed a full-chain prevention and control solution.
Honeycombing and pitting in GRC components mostly occur during the production stage and are closely related to material mix proportions, mixing processes, pouring and vibration, and other steps. In the Shanghai Astronomy Museum public art project, Qinglong optimized its production processes to keep the incidence of honeycombing and pitting in GRC sculpture components below 0.5%, far below the industry average.
Improper material mix proportions are the primary cause. An imbalance between cement and aggregate, or insufficient cementitious materials, leads to poor slurry flowability, making it difficult to fill mold gaps. Inadequate mixing causes slurry segregation and excessive air bubbles; after pouring, the bubbles cannot escape, forming holes. Insufficient vibration results in inadequate slurry compactness, while unclean mold surfaces or unevenly applied release agents cause surface adhesion, forming pitted surfaces. Qinglong strictly controls every step in production, using automated mixing equipment and high-frequency vibration processes to reduce defects at the source.
Honeycombing and pitting not only affect the decorative effect of GRC components. In landmark buildings such as the Wuhan Han Show Theater, surface defects severely impact the building's overall aesthetic appeal. More importantly, surface holes become channels for water and pollutant ingress, accelerating the aging of internal glass fibers and the corrosion of steel reinforcement, ultimately reducing component strength and durability over time. During the renovation of an old project, Qinglong found that components with severe honeycombing and pitting had a service life 5-8 years shorter than components with intact surfaces.
Qinglong has established a closed-loop prevention and control system of "prevention + repair." Before production, mix proportions are optimized to ensure a balance between slurry flowability and cohesion; high-precision molds are used, cleaned thoroughly and evenly coated with a dedicated release agent; during pouring, layered vibration is applied, combined with a vacuum dewatering process to expel air bubbles; before leaving the factory, minor defects are repaired, with holes filled using a dedicated repair mortar to ensure a flat surface. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, this solution successfully achieved zero visible defects on GRC curtain wall surfaces.
The surface quality of GRC components is a direct reflection of a company's craftsmanship. Twenty-eight years of technical accumulation have taught Qinglong that only by controlling every detail of the entire production process can high-quality GRC components that combine aesthetics and performance be produced. Scientifically preventing and controlling honeycombing and pitting defects not only enhances building quality but also extends component service life, creating greater value for customers.
