The stability of large-area GRC hinges on resolving the "invisible tension" created by temperature changes. Large-area GRC curtain walls, due to their wide coverage and large number of components, are prone to thermal expansion and contraction under temperature changes, which forms thermal stress; if not properly controlled, this can lead to component cracking, sealant detachment, loose connection joints, and other problems. As a Qinglong manufacturer with 28 years of experience in large-area GRC projects, we draw on project practice including the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center and the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center to explain in detail the core technologies for thermal stress control.
#How Thermal Stress Occurs: Key Influencing Factors Thermal stress in large-area GRC curtain walls mainly arises from three factors: first, ambient temperature changes—summer scorching heat and winter severe cold create day-night and seasonal temperature differences, causing varying degrees of deformation in GRC components and the main structure; second, differences in material properties—GRC materials have different coefficients of thermal expansion from main structures such as steel and concrete, so their deformation under temperature changes is inconsistent, inducing mutual restraint stress; third, curtain wall structural restraint—large-area curtain walls have strong overall integrity, and if sufficient deformation space is not reserved, component deformation will be restricted, leading to stress concentration. In the Shanghai Qingpu R&D and Production project, Qinglong precisely calculated temperature deformation to provide a scientific basis for stress control.
#Core Control Technologies: Three Key Approaches To address thermal stress in large-area GRC curtain walls, Qinglong adopts three core control technologies: first, properly setting expansion joints—expansion joints are placed every 30-40 meters along the curtain wall length, with a width of 20-30mm, filled with elastic waterproof materials to absorb thermal deformation; for example, the 120,000 m² GRC roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center effectively released stress through evenly spaced expansion joints; second, using elastic connection joints—rigid connections between GRC components and the main structure are replaced with elastic connections, using connectors and sealing materials with a certain deformation capacity to allow slight component movement and resolve restraint stress; third, optimizing material formulations—fiber reinforcement materials and modifiers are added to GRC materials to improve crack resistance and toughness, reducing the risk of cracking caused by thermal stress.
#Engineering Practice: Qinglong's Precise Control Solution In large-area GRC curtain wall projects, Qinglong has established a full-process thermal stress control system. In the design phase, professional software simulates deformation under different temperature environments to optimize the curtain wall structure and expansion joint layout; in the production phase, the curing temperature of GRC components is controlled to avoid internal stress at delivery; in the installation phase, a suitable construction temperature (5-35°C) is selected, avoiding work under extreme temperatures while ensuring expansion joints and elastic connection joints are properly installed; in the after-sales phase, expansion joint sealing materials and connection joints are regularly inspected, with aged or damaged parts replaced promptly. The 30,000 m² GRC curtain wall of the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center has shown no cracking caused by thermal stress over years of use, making it an industry benchmark.
Thermal stress control in large-area GRC curtain walls is key to ensuring long-term project stability and must run through the entire process of design, production, installation, and after-sales service. With professional simulation calculations, mature technical solutions, and extensive practical experience, the Qinglong manufacturer achieves precise control of thermal stress. As building curtain walls trend toward larger areas and greater complexity, scientific thermal stress control technology will become the core competitiveness for GRC manufacturers to undertake high-end projects.
